Anyone know if I can buy a 900p screen for my G46VW? stock resolution is 1366x768.

I was hoping to get the third one down:

    https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/ASUS/G46VW/

    UPDATE:

    BIG NEWS!

Called HID-Evolution, and the just happened to be to getting in the 900p displays for individual sale. 30pin and all. So convenient that they get them in the day I call. :p

Cost me $125 with a zero dead pixel guarantee. It's going to be plug and play, so I'm excited.

After talking on the phone for almost an hour, and getting things sorted out, they even offered me free shipping, LOVE these guys. Thanks Angel and Ted!

I will be doing a Step-By-Step How-To once I get this in a separate forum, and will be putting the link here once i get it.

    EDIT:
A link to the screen if anyone else wants one:

    http://www.hidevolution.com/auo-au-optronics-b140rtn03-0-14-hd-1600x900-edp-led-lcd-display.html

    BIGGER NEWS!

The screen was delivered this afternoon while I was at work, and I couldn't say I could have rushed home any sooner.

I cracked the box open, and low-and-behold --- IT WAS HERE.

I couldn't wait a second longer, and slapped this bad boy in as soon as I could.

    IT WORKS!

This thing looks amazing for first impression. I did manage to get pictures along the way, and I will be doing a separate thread with a How-To and final pictures.

I hope you guys are almost as excited as I am, because we've finally got a way to do 900p :D

You need those data cables, even if you make a cable fit it wont work but you likely already have a 40 pin connector, it might just be missing wires to it.

rev 1 g46vw is using the 1366x768 screens that originally have come out with the 30pin connector on the board and therefore not allowing a 40pin to work.

rev 2 g46vw using the 1600x screen is using the 40pin connector on the board.

The only way to get a rev 1 with a rev 2 screen 1600x to work is to replace the motherboard as well.

    :(

Anyone else with any knowledge on this? If replacing the Mobo is the only option, where can I go to get one with the 40pin?

rev 1 is using 30pin rev 2 is using 40pin confirmed with asus

I believe this may work, but without testing or trying it myself I cant guarantee it! Good luck

So I decided to crack her open, but now I'm even more confused... 30 pin connectors, but revision 2.0?

Ok I made that rev 1 and 2 up to make it clear we are talking about 2 different versions of g46vw,

what I was meaning to say was if you bought the g46vw with a 14.0"(1366 x 768) screen, this is the first version of this laptop that came out with the 30pin connection to support the 1366x768 screen

If you bought the newly released refreshed version with the 1600x900 screen this uses the 40pin connector.

Looking at your pictures you have the rev 1 version first release which is using the 30pin connector.

Now since you want to add the higher resolution screen 1600x900 which uses the 40pin you can try the converter but it's not guaranteed to work.

I hope this clears this up, apologises if I was unclear originally

higher spec screen 1600x900 runs 40pin
lower spec screen 1368x768 runs 30pin

The converter would have to have active electronics as those data lines are for the second LVDS channel, if that's not there then you will only get half the pixels working.

I actually ordered one of those a couple days ago, and am thinking about ordering the screen for ~$60 just for Sh*ts and giggles.

Here's hoping it works. I'll report back with my findings to try and this sorted out for those who also want a 900p screen, but are unwilling to take the risk.

    EDIT:

Do you think one of these would work better?

From what I'm seeing about the specs about the panel is 45/45/15/35 viewing angles, 250 cd/m2 Brightness (up from 200) and same 400:1 contrast ratio.

So its brighter, better resolution, but worse side to side viewing angles, and same contrast ratio. Honestly, I think its worth it. Better resolution, obviously is the biggest plus, but brighter is cool to. Just wish it would have the same viewing angle from side to side as the current display (80 or 85 degrees?)

How about some info on srgb coverage and color gamut percentage? How about info on the screen whether it is grainy or clear etc...

You would need a proper colour calibration tool to offer any significant data.

Congrats on getting it working! I'd be curious on screen quality opinions. Much more interested in that aspect than the resolution bump... Some screens just look noticeably better than others, curious how it compares to the x768 panel in that regard. Resolution wise I'm totally happy, but better screen sure wouldn't hurt my feelings

EDIT: Well, figured for $100 I'd give the new screen a shot... chatted with Ted, should ship out today, will try and get installed before I head out of town next weekend. Fingers crossed for nice image quality

The tolerances on the higher res panels need to be tighter so its going to be better ;)

mate, thanks for this tread, this resolution is killing me :) I wait for how to topic, now I will order display from HID evolution.

can you tell any difference except resolution? Maybe better brightness, better viewing angles?

Worse viewing angles, much more noticeable brightness, and I think a little bit better color. Could be wrong though. I do like how much more clearer everything is. Haven't changed resolutions between 1080p lately. (usually use my desktop)

I highly recommend picking up one of these displays.

Sadly, mine came with some backlight bleeding in the center near the bottom. Called HID, and their sending me a replacement display. I even paid for the extra $25 dead pixel guarantee. You'd think they'd catch something like that.

Oh well, I'm hoping the new one is fixed, and it's not just all the displays. it isn't insanely noticeable, but I can see it.

nice, but you scared me with backlight bleeding tough :) coz I live in Georgia (republic one, not the state of US) and sending display back for exchange would cost me twice the price of display )))

Got the new panel installed this afternoon, have to give HID props on getting it shipped out fast. Ordered late Friday and it arrived yesterday afternoon via Priority mail... speedy especially considering it traveled from coast to coast.

Install is a snap, really simple. All you have to do is unscrew the four corner screws from the face of the bezel (side that says ASUS on the bottom in silver, screws are hidden under plastic pads) and the bezel snaps right off. Four more screws on lid frame and one connector and you are done.... reassemble in reverse. Takes 15 minutes if that... Just be gentle with the tabs/snaps and you'll be fine.

I want to use the screen for a bit longer before I form a legit review/opinion but right off the bat it is in fact a better screen imho. Resolution/increased screen real estate is really nice but of course expected. 900p seems just right for this size, and is much "crisper" without being too small. Viewing angles I haven't noticed being much different, and I agree is does appear to be noticeably brighter which the specifications show. Colors are a bit richer as well... still no where near a nice glossy screen color wise, but for a matte screen which I do prefer in a laptop for mobile purposes by far, it's an improvement. The stock 768p panel is just not very good unfortunately.

Screen is still not going to be anyone's all time favorite, but it's the screen that should have come in these machines from the get go... marked improvement across the board, even if it's still not drop dead gorgeous. For what HID is asking for these ($100), and the ease of installation (less than 30 minutes with only a Phillips screwdriver), it's a no brainer. I'm sure you can find panels elsewhere as well, but this one literally drops right in no if and or buts... and the video cable lines up perfectly just like stock, no adapters needed.

Also, as far as the backlight bleeding, mine doesn't seem to have this issue, so I have to assume you just unfortunately got a bad one and your replacement should be good to go... did a pixel test as well, and so far so good, no stuck or dead pixels at all.

Nice little upgrade, based on install and first few hours of use, really enjoying it and would recommend.

Sweet, I got to admit I didn't think the resolution bump would really matter much, but it's amazing the extra real estate it adds to work with. I'm still getting used to it ha, had gotten so used to the 768. Really makes the little g46 a legit all arounder for work and play as Meaker mentioned. I think you'll enjoy it.

just a quick question, if you know :)
0 dead pixel guarantee means that they check screen for dead pixels before send it to you, or they just change the screen if you find one after installing?
and if answer is #2, could they just send you screen with dead pixel which was returned from +25$ customers? ))))) I mean they could do so, because I guess they already have a lot of returned screens with dead pixels :)

Normally it's a bit of both, dead pixels can develop over a short period too so it would normally also cover a period of time.

I only signed up to this forum to thank you all for the wealth of information I've found out about the screen... to the point where it led me to purchase the screen myself!

Ordered the replacement screen on Friday night from HIDEvolution and received it on Wednesday morning... not bad considering I'm in Melbourne, Australia!

Anyway... onto the screen. You must admit that the screen that comes with the G46VW (Best Buy edition, bought it while I was in New York) is not very good. The colors are washed out (even my Lenovo S205 netbook had better color reproduction) and my suspicions were right, a 14" screen of that res (1366x768) just looks too big and is not suited to any real work at all. In fact I must admit that web browsing at that resolution is quite a painful experience. Straight away after installing the screen (which was relatively easy thanks to be77solo's instructions), the difference is night and day. The colors look much better, the contrast is better and best of all the res for the screen perfectly matches the size whereby its comfortable to use but you still have lots of screen real estate.

All in all happy with my purchase and the only upgrade I would do to the G46VW that truly makes a huge difference. Would highly recommend to anyone with a G46VW!

Well blow me if it just did not turn up :)

First off kudos to HIDevolution, fantastic service, quick delivery and well packaged :)

Screen fitted, will need some double sided tape to tidy up the bottom part of the bezel, however picture is great, no dead pixels, nice bright floor space to work on :)

    A happy geek indeed.

Thanks for the report and the note, glad to be of a little help  I agree, it's a really nice upgrade and what Asus should have included from the start, but I know it was more of a Best Buy price decision... and it's hard to argue with such a nice little machine for under a grand.

Welcome to the boards! If you happen to get even more frisky, the mSATA is just waiting to be fiddled with ;)

Someone should do some before and after shots if you have a decent camera.
