This is something I did not discern at first but now I'm starting to realize that my G50V has a much better 1680 x 1050 than my G51 1920 x 1080. The viewing angles are much better and color seems to be deeper and richer. The G51 has a non-viewable image if you just don't have quite the right angle. Images glow and or portrayed shadowing, whereas the G50 has LCD TV type of richer picture regardless of viewing angle. I paid $1399.99 for the P8400 + 9700MGT (Sept 2008) and about $1099.99 for 720qm + GTS 360M (Feb. 2010).

My question is did I get a crappy display, possibly defective, with my G51J or is the Chimei screen that the G50V has just superior? Can't find anything about this after extensive google research.

You're comparing apples to oranges. A high quality low-res screen is about the same price as a low quality high res screen.
