Has anyone ever tried to install a 3D (120Hz) screen from the G51J-3D into a G50VT?
So far as I can tell, the screens are the same size. I Found a website selling the G51J-3D screens brand new for $87.
Would this be a simple swap? Remove the old monitor and install the new?

some on reply! as i would like to know as well!

I'm going to vote not possible, as the 3d screens (like all screens for the G51J) are led backlit, while your screen as well as mine are single-CCFL backlit. Even if the LVDS connector lined up, you wouldn't see anything.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Then you've got the inverter board that might not be compatible with the motherboard connection, and hardware support that may/not work too.
Vote #2 for unlikely. -
Not true, the website I found had the screen with CCFL backlighting.

Awesome, didn't know they did that. I just knew everything is LED-lit now. You're welcome to give it a try, I honestly don't know how it'll behave. Connections should fit, I'd say give it a go. The only problems ahead are:
-Hoping it'll work at 120Hz
-Getting the shutter glasses+sync kit (probably not that expensive, right?)
-Installing the 3d parts of the 9m series drivers
These are of course smaller issues compared to what you have now. Personally I'm not willing to sacrifice 1680x1050 to get 120Hz but that's not what these forums are about.
I say if you have ~$125 to burn, go for it, grab a camera, and post your results! -
OK so I bought the 3D LCD from the website I listed previously and here are my findings:
The LCD was an easy swap, I removed the old one and installed the new one with no problems (using the stock inverter board).
The computer booted right up. Under the windows Screen Resolution properties box it showed the model number of the screen and everything looked good.
HOWEVER, the screen would NOT go above 60hz. I tried everything I could think of, it just had no option to set it to 120hz. I tried setting a custom resolution/refresh rate, but it would not take 120hz.
So long story short, that screen will NOT work for 3D. I'm not sure what that company is thinking, but they are trying to pass off a 60hz screen as a replacement for the Asus G51J 3D, which obviously will not work for 3D. -
It could be that the motherboard LVDS output doesn't support 120Hz. Disappointing but hey you took the chance. I hope you can get a refund! :/
Thank you for taking one for the Asus team. I'm sure this thread will come in handy for several people in the future! Sorry it didn't work out though. Have some rep.
