Aloha! My faithful 3 year old g50VT has red dots/lines shadowing objects on the screen at times, and if anyone can tell me what's causing it, I'd appreciate it! It has the GeForce 9800m GS video card, and the laptop is 64bit.
I play casual games or the wonderful, old Myst-adventure style games only. Nothing to stress the laptop, in other words. The lines come and go seemingly randomly. Usually, it is just the shadow, but at worst it was horizontal lines nearly filling the screen. (sorry- my pictures are all on my computer, not the web, so I can't post one)
What I've done or determined:
It is not temp related: Laptop was running hot (above 100*C) but I changed the fan, cleaned the vents, changed the paste, and got a Thermaltake chill pad which brought temps down to barely above 80*C at most when pushed. I still get the red lines, even when the laptop is cold.
I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it (not a clean one, though) and that did not solve the problem.
Sometimes restarting the laptop will make the lines go away, sometimes not.
So.... any ideas?
Thanks!

Why do you still have that dinosaur? :x
You know the g55 is already released. -
Can you post a screenshot of the problem. If a screenshot does not show the problem a photo of it.
Is it a certain section of the screen that appears red/shadowed or is it random areas that they appear?
Does it look anything like this. How are your temps~? -
Sounds like graphic artifacts, typical bga cold solder joint or solder ball fracture issue.
This is a pic of an xbox 360 that has the same problem, probably 100% worse than what you're experiencing.
The gpu would be the culprit, a reflow should fix the issue though. -
This works for me, if I get the lines/dots I "open" the lid to the maximum and then bring it back to its normal position (sometimes I have to do this a couple of times) I think it is a bad/loose contact somewhere but I have never been able to narrow it down... -

Still have it! I just bought a G74 for my returning Marine son...and swooned when it roared to life. If I could justify one of those beasts for myself, I'd have one! -

Take a screenshot. If the artifacts appear on the image of the screenshot on another computer, it is your GPU or drivers.
If the artifacts don't show up, try an external monitor. If that image is clear, it is either your LCD or a loose/defective LVDS (display) cable. If you can flex/move the lid and change the screen, it is probably the cable or connector at the LCD end. -
Thanks for responding! Posted this at the Asus site comm forum...and got zip in response. Also sent in a tech inquiry at Asus and nothing.
Neither of the pictures are like what's going on. It is red dots to the right of letters, cursor, lines on the screen etc. I can't find any pictures on the web that looks like what I'm seeing, and the only way to post here is from an URL site, which I don't have.
Temp right now, with red lines, is 48C, and the laptop's been on maybe 30 minutes just checking mail and the news.
Gripen, I tried that and the lines did go away! Hmm. If that's the issue, jiggling the cover is better than having the video card die. -

If the LVDS cable is likely the problem, you can take off the left hinge cover and make sure it is secure at the board end. If that makes no difference, you can take the bezel off of the screen and remove the LCD to check that side.

and pics with the bezel off here in a non-related thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/383177-how-disconnect-disable-g50v-g50vt-lights.html -
Allurgroceries, thanks. I"ll connect it to a monitor when it does it again.

I am probably buying a new laptop within a couple of months though -
It's had the dots twice recently, and both times they disappeared when I barely moved the screen. Gripen, I think you found the problem. If I can work up the courage- and am desperate enough!- I might try AllurGroceries' suggestion. I thank you both.
I am having fantasies that my Marine son comes home, takes one look at the 17.3" G74 and says, "It's too big, Mom. You keep it!" Eh, not gonna happen, though. (-: -
Hey!
First of all, sorry for my awfull english. I was having a similar problem a year ago, i fixed it by doing what this video says:
