New member here, hoping you might have some advice. I was recently given a G50VT to attempt to diagnose and fix. This machine refuses to power up at all. The power cord appears to be OK ( will test with a meter tomorrow), but the machine shows no signs of even being plugged in, much less booting. I am wondering if anyone else has run into this issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does the light on the AC adapter stay on when you plug it in to the laptop? If not you can have a bad AC plug on the motherboard or a problem with the power circuit, or a bad AC adapter... have you tried it without the battery?

Will it power on for even a second? Have you checked the fan cable? Have you tried one stick of RAM at a time?

Without any details on what you've tried it'll be impossible to help further.

I got the laptop with the RAM and HDD removed, so I am not sure what it would do. As far as I can tell, the Light on the AC adapter does stay on when plugged in. I managed to scrounge up 2 sticks of 512 Mb DDR2 So-DIMMS and installed them, with no luck there. I was thinking possibly a bad DC jack. As it stands, I get no response at all from the system; No fans, no power or battery lights on. I will try it with the battery removed tomorrow. I really haven't opened it up farther than the RAM and HDD covers so far. Hopefully I will get it open and start looking around inside later this week. Thank you for your suggestions. I will try to keep this thread current with what I have tried and the results I got.

If you don't have the right ram in it, or any ram at all, it won't power up.

I finally got to try this after installing RAM, and indeed the light on the AC adapter does go out as soon as I plug the laptop in. Could this be a bad solder connection on the DC jack, or is it just easier to replace the jack? And thank for your advice ALLurGroceries. Much appreciated.

Yes, it could be a shorted jack, or some other kind of problem in the charging/power circuit, a hard one to diagnose unless you have a spare adapter or multimeter to test with, or take it apart and look for a problem on the board (like the jack being broken, or brown/darkened PCB around the jack or voltage regulators).

Thanks for your help. Hopefully I will get the time to play with it this weekend. I do have a multimeter and will try to test it out and check the PCB for discoloration. Have a good day!
