Hi guys, I have a strange issue with a replacement fan for my beloved but now aging G50. The cooling fan was going out, and I got a replacement off Ebay last week. Disassembled, repasted, cleaned everything up while I was in there, and reassembled with the new fan. Here's the deal: It doesn't spin up at all. The colors on the cables are the same and it fits the plug just fine but doesn't work. The computer boots OK, but after about 30 seconds of no fan running I get paranoid about the heat and shut it off. I never really though about it, but IIRC the fan should blow full speed for at least a couple seconds when you turn the laptop on. Anybody run into this before?

edit: Finally got ahold of a multimiter, and the board is indeed putting out 5V like its supposed to, so I'm going to return the fan and hopefully a different one will work.

    Nope, new problem:

The fan actually works, but doesn't spin up on boot if the heatsink is screwed down. If I hold the cooling assembly up above the cpu and boot the machine, it spins up just fine. If its held down on the cpu and/or screwed down, it doesn't start at all. I've checked everywhere to see if there's something blocking the fan, but there isn't. Has anybody run into this before? It seems odd that moving the thing even a few millimeters stops it from spinning up.

Don't worry they all do that, the cpu has to get decently hot before the fan turns on. The gpu will get to about 197F or so then turn the fan on. It's a horrible design flaw but it's not abnormal.

Here's how i modified my g51vx to run cooler with before and after temps.
