So I purchased a G50VT-X5 from BestBuy before my Freshman semester in college and it had been amazing until about 2 weeks ago during a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 gaming session where it locked up tight and I had to hard reset it. Before I had troubles with the screen flickering and then whiting out(which I found to be the cable to the LCD, which I remedied)
Since the BFBC2 issue, I've not been able to run it for more than 5 minutes. I re-pasted everything, removed the bottom panel of my lappy, have the rear elevated with a fan blowing cool air under and out, and re-installed/uninstall every Nvidia driver available including one that I KNEW was stable for my GPU.
The temps average 74C when running Furmark and even when the issue happens when I'm running BFBC2 it's only around 68C.
I plugged in an external monitor and the same issue happens even quicker.
(before finding a stable driver, the driver would crash before the screen pixelated)
The issue is:
Artifacting and then locking up, only way to reset is a hard one.
I'm guessing my GPU is done but I was wondering if there was anyone that could offer a Phoenix Elixir and get this bad boy steady again?
-
i am guessing that laptop is like 4 years old? so i am gonna assume the GPU is seeing a bright light and going towards it...
-
That's what I figured, just wanted to know if there was a sure-fire way to isolate the issue to my GPU.
On that note, anyone wanna G50VT-X5 with a shoddy GPU?
Everything else is bueno, hah! Suppose I'll be tossing it up on CL and seeing if anyone wants it. I'm going to wipe it as soon as my desktop's new processor comes in then. -

Hm, you could try something like CUDA GPU memtest (it's for Linux). I dunno if there is a similar utility for Windows. Probably is... maybe this? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/160729-nvidia-amd-video-card-test-occt.html
P.S. I think you're just joking but we have a marketplace with rules for selling. -
OCCT GPU test found THOUSANDS of errors in my GPU but I've no idea what that tells me to be honest with you.
It's been years since I've done anything serious with computers and now I'm thinking of trying to save this one and possibly build it up to spec again.
So with OCCT finding thousands of errors I'd assume my GPU is toasted?
It artifacted and then the screen turned OFF last time I tried to run Furmark.
(just messin of course about the sellin and such.) -
Get enough posts and you can market it, or put a WTB in the market for your graphics cards, lots of us have spare parts laying around that will never get used
-
I have located another 9800M GS (G94-655-B1) that I believe is a correct replacement for just under a tank of gas, though I'm trying to spend as little as possible as I would like to use this laptop while I build my desktop.
And I'm not really the kind of guy that would join a forum simply to sell/buy a part hahaha, my email is on file so I might as well legitimately reach the post requirement and become part of the community, riiiight???
So I have found a replacement but I'm not sure if it's what I'm looking for, since I'm not familiar with this board I won't post the link until someone gives me the ok. That being said, is it acceptable to post an ebay link to said item to be evaluated by others? -

Yeah that's fine to post an ebay link as long as you aren't associated with the seller or sale (no referral codes, etc).
Your VRAM may be the culprit, but it doesn't really matter since you can't replace it easily. -
<s> NVIDIA G94 655 B1 A2 A1 9800M GS Graphics GeForce GPU BGA IC Chipset | eBay
That's what I'm looking at and if you let me know it will work, I'll pull the trigger within the hour.</s>
How would I go about checking VRAM?
(I did a fresh install of Windows 7 and it still occurs) -

The VRAM is the memory on your GPU, which is the most likely cause of your GPU memtest errors. They are soldered onto the GPU card so it's not easy to replace.
There should be an ASUS part number (P/N) on the GPU card, you can use this to find a replacement.
You may want to run a regular, main memory test: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Diagnosing-memory-problems-on-your-computer

HAHA! same thing happened to me TODAY! Iwas watching youtube and the screen started flickering green.. and it froze on me D:< so i had to press the power button... when it was booting, i kept seeing like 3 or 4 really thin white horizontal lines flickering on and off then when it got to the "WELCOME" screen (where i would usually put in my password) there was GREEN $HIT all over the screen and it would freeze again...
i went into safe mode and disabled the gpu and thats how i am still able to use my g50vt
I should have seen it coming, it overheats like every time i play a game, and yes i replaced the thermal pastei think it has to do with the fan.. it was so loud i think the motor is going out.. oh well
my gpu is fried! >.< im gonna buy the g75vw or the m17x r4
idk which one yet tho ...
i might just keep this laptop since it still works... just cant play any games >.< aside from minesweeper xD
R.I.P G50vt-x5 U WERE TRULY AWESOME :3 -
But it seems like a coincidence that the same GPUs would all die around the same time.... Did you guys recently upgrade your driver? The latest one I had installed was 306.23 when this happened.
G50VT-X5 9800m GS fried?
