I hate to make this my first post however, I have been reading abunch of different post's on this forum. I am very unfamilar with all the software and unique things you can do with computers. I bought the best buy model G50v back in early 2008. Computer has served me excellent, until now.
I am wondering about the t9900 CPU upgrade, I thought about the X9100, but heard the t9900 is better. My question is really, do I need to replace my t5750 for a much better processor, or is there something I can do to eliminate 12 FPS while playing Medium graphics setting on RIFT (new MMORPG) that came out March 1, 2011.
I already (2 weeks ago) took my fan apart, cleaned it and cleaned all the fins, adding new thermal paste to the CPU/ (perhaps the GPU? What ever other one had left over thermal paste...)
Sorry for the questions, but I really would love to make this computer better for my needs, thanks![]()

The CPU has less to do with games than the GPU. A CPU upgrade might get you a few FPS in a few games, but usually not worth the money.
I don't think the G50's GPU can be upgraded, so I don't think there's a whole lot you can do. -
Rift only requires a graphics card of 5900........
-
Your machine has a rather old graphics card, 512MB of VRAM. Your card is just barely meeting recommended specs.
Try lowering the graphics settings. -
out of luck then, Off to research to buy a better computer than I suppose.
-
It's probably a fine machine, just try lowering the settings. :3
-
It is, I love it. But I want to run higher setting, who doesn't?
Besides the obsolete card (which can't even been changed), is there anything else I can do to this machine? -
^^
I thought the G50's could be upgraded with the 260 from the G51/G60
EDIT: Here you go
http://blog.san-dex.com/2010/07/asus-g50-nvidia-260m-swap-procedure.html -
Oh, thats right.. 260M 1GB Video Card right? cost's a fortune?
-
=s
Probably in the $300-600$ ballpark. :3 -
can you use the EVGA GeForce GTX260 ?
-
^^
No thats a desktop card lol
You would have to go to like ebay and find someone selling a 260M -
-
Neither could I, only ones for Alienware.
Perhaps the buy/trade/selling section of this site? -
No wonder it's so huge!! lol

But it also depends a lot on the game. WoW, for example, is CPU heavy, but there are games that rely more on the GPU than the CPU.
Also, whether or not his motherboard can handle an upgrade, I'm not sure what the G50's motherboard supports.
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...uage=en-us, the T9600/T9400/P8600/P8400/P7350
There ya go, that's what you can do.
It's not easy to change a CPU out on a laptop if you've never done it before. You might want to do some research as to how to disassemble your unit, what thermal paste to get, how to clean a heatsink, et cetera. And if you do go through with it, I would recommend you give the inside of your laptop a good dusting.

Also, not cheap. In this situation, I don't think it matters what you change out. The CPU has to compensate for the GPU's lack of power, hence why a CPU upgrade is useful. However, with a stronger GPU, the CPU will have to compensate less.
Darned if you do, darned if you don't.
Of course, the CPU is far easier to change out than the GPU (relatively speaking) and I don't think anyone has been able to find the 260m. -
). Processor doesn't just help with games, I do lots of other things on my computer. As for Rift game, I only meet the MINIMUM req's for processor
Also.. I've read the swap post on here and a few people found the 260m, but I guess in due time I'll snag one
Thanks for the help.. it's much appreciated -
I'll just pipe in to say upgrading from a P8400 to a processor that can run at 3.5GHz helped not only heat up my computer but added a lot of smoothness to my games. Games are more often GPU limited now, and my 3dMark score went up by about 1k. CPU benchmarks went up by 30-50% across the board. GTA4 framerates increased 50%.
Upgrading to the 260m afterwards bumped me even further. My machine used to do about 8200 3dMarks with the 9800m flashed to GTS clocks, and now pushes 11700 3dMarks after all my upgrades. Not bad for a 2+ year old machine, I think. I have a 1050p screen, too. at 1280x800 I get over 12.5k 3dMarks, so your 768p screen might fare even better. -
So a better processor will in turn help, but with a new GPU it will help even more...?

As others have said a P8400 will be a significant bottleneck on the performance of your system. Upgrading the CPU is the first thing you should do before considering a GPU upgrade.
-
As AllUrGroceries said, I'd upgrade the CPU first as that's the bottleneck in most games. A faster CPU means the GPU can work harder (since they work together to render your game), and is much easier to install than a new GPU. A new GPU adds a lot of complications that I wouldn't recommend unless you know by heart exactly what the procedure and ramifications are (fan speed and forceware problems among a few other things). Besides, your bottleneck would still be the CPU.
I have mentioned a CPU upgrade to a few people here for their G50/G51's, it happens about once a month or so. Check out the following threads, my advice pertains to you too:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/550790-g51vx-new-cpu-again.html
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...m/545521-g51vx-rx05-cpu-upgrade-question.html
IMO the CPU upgrade was totally worth it, simply because it speeds everything up, not just gaming. Web browsing and most notably photo editing are significantly faster. -
Alright, made my decision... the SLGEE T9900 off ebay it is then..
Thank you.
This seem legit? Core 2 SLGEE T9900 35W 3.06G 6M L2 T9800 T9600 Tested - eBay (item 220749490111 end time Apr-03-11 16:26:42 PDT) -
I would get a X9100. Basically the same chip as the t9900 but has an unlocked multiplier so you can overclock it really easily.
New Intel CORE2 X9100 QHBQ Super low Temp! - eBay (item 250776808790 end time Mar-22-11 07:20:00 PDT)
Also many people from this forum have bought from this seller. -
Alright... So to purchase the X9100?!! Lol
-
If you want the best dual core you can use then the X9100 is it.
-
If you have the money to spend, then yeah the X9100 is best. The one xxERIKxx linked to looks good, it's equivalent to an SLGE7.
For more advice on what CPU to get look no further than this post (links to individual post):

I read the post, thanks for the link
I once again, appreciate the help and thoughts guys, off to purchase the x9100. Thank you
I'll let you all know how it works once I get it.
Also.. My bios software is version 202... Hasn't been updated since 6/2008... Anything wrong with that? -
-
Where do I update the BIOS at?..I looked but I tell ya sometimes..
Also, according to GPU-Z my BIOS version is unknown, and on the BIOS screen it says 202, so... yep. And my Driver version is 8.17.12.6658 If that need's updating to
Thanks...
Also.. I have had a problem with my stupid screen for almost 1.5 years, similar to GSOD.. however it seems different to me.
My screen randomly goes completly white/black flickering for about 2 seconds and then completly white. Only way I can fix it is to close the laptop screen and just open it again (the lid). Goes away for that short time, but comes back every day. -

The display problem sounds like an issue with the LVDS cable connection. You can pop off the left hinge cover and make sure the connector is firmly place by pushing down on it a bit.

I love the help, thank you very much -
3 hours later... man this would be terrible if we never heard from him again.
-
Hey wait a minute...
lol
It's been good for now. Also after reading the BIOS guide, I don't have any problems with my computer, is it still necessary to update it even though the guide says don't fix what ain't broken? lol.
Also, I received my x9100 in the mail today -
Updated a version anyway.
Installed new CPU, I must say, extremely easy. Took me 15 minutes... Gaming is faster, no lag on ultra none the less.. But still, will be much better if I ever get a gtx 260m
My temperatures are 15-20C colder... Idk why? Also, have a link anywhere on how to OC this processor? -
Here you go: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/489140-how-unlock-core-2-extreme-multiplier-windows.html
Throttlestop is an awesome piece of software... all credits and a big thanks goes to unclewebb! -
It's cooler because it's a newer stepping--more efficient and can work with lower voltages to maintain the same clocks across the board. Nice to see you got everything installed!
Throttlestop will let you unlock the potential of the CPU. You can probably get it to 3.6-3.8GHz depending on cooling and the like. Play around with it, brace for a few BSODs, and find a setting that's stable and zippy -
Nice, Throttlestop is amazingly simple.. I set it right below 3.6GHz. Running 15C idle. Now for some games!
-
Edit: lol, never mind this post. -
-
These numbers look great so far! -
Ah you people with the latest technology and more threads than we have limbs.
-
SO, as I logged on just now, I went into throttle stop, and changed the multiplyer to 14 and my computer immediately shut down to a blue screen saying "We have shut down your computer to prevent any damage of the system, etc etc..."
So... is this normal now? lol
-
If you get a bsod you need more voltage. Just keep an eye on your temps.
-
Thanks for the heads up, -
Updates..
Still around 35C when gaming! Loving it, turned the voltage up to.. 1.3v? instead of like 1.25v? lol Didn't crash!
My Gpu is around 70-83C.. is this normal? I forgot to record temperatures before.
Thanks, .. Man I never thought I could learn so much about my Pc in 5 days of being on this site!!! Love it! -
Everything looks good so far, I wouldn't push it too far past 1.3V though. 83C is excellent, I'd only worry if it pushes past 95C or so.
-
When I play on ultra I'm at roughly 23-26 FPS. Before the CPU, I was at 14-17 FPS.
When onn low I'm running 45-55 FPS!! Before the CPU, I was at 22-27 FPS, Sometimes 30's.
How much would the GTX 260m help this?
Hmm... I was reading.. Apparently I cannot upgrade my GPU, since I have the G50v-xt.. not the G50VT with he 9800m. I only have the 9700m GT, which apparently has no independent vBIOS. Also it has different screw mounting patterns.. Can anyone confirm this?
