My friend has a g50vt since last summer and since January he has to go into the BIOS and select his hdd to boot. At least I think this is what he's doing.
Is this caused to a dead CMOS battery?
He used to keep his laptop battery out of the computer when using it, could this be why?

If the battery was dead the system would not keep time after losing all power and the cmos settings would likely reset. As far as the boot menu goes the esc key brings it up, could cause it?
Fun part is the laptop has to come 90% apart. You will have to pull the screen and then undo all the screws, remove keyboard a couple more screws and then the top half the case.
Its right next to the south bridge chip and express slot. Got a nice chunk of double sided tape on the underside of it so dont fear when it doesn't give without a fight. Unless your prepared to solder a new one to the leads you will need to order one from asus. -

Should be able to find one of those. Search for "cr2032 laptop", the ones with the right connector should pop up.
Can't you take off the keyboard + top case assembly to get at it? The screen doesn't have to come off for that does it... you can wiggle it out if I remember correctly. I could be wrong, it's been a while... -

I thinking this is actually not a CMOS battery problem now. The time does stay. I think it's a masterboot record problem.

Maybe it's a boot order problem, if the boot disk is the 2nd hdd.

Can't he RMA?

A G50Vt is not likely to be in warranty.
