Gaming last night on the net and my G50 just went dark. I've tried 2 different (charged) batteries and just tried the bios reset button on the bottom. No results, just dead as a doornail.

Is it my power supply? What is that called? (I have the dis assembly guide) and a good toolset, I think my son can replace the part if one of you can point me to it.

I surely would appreciate any help/feedback you could give me. This G50 is 11 months old, BB refurb from Geeks.com.....no warranty.

Or if there aren't any LEDs which indicate whether the PSU works or not you could try to check the PSU with a multimeter if you happen to have one around.

What ALLurGroceries said about the RAM is definitely worth trying.

No led, no indicators of any kind. No lights, nothing.

I was in a java program (playing Runescape) and it just went totally dark. Had a battery in it and it was hooked up to dc in charging battery just fine.

The only prior problems I have had was that in game it would blank out the playing area, which I attributed to graphics card? I would just sign out and sign back in and it would be fine.

    Thanks for the reply.

If you have no lights at all, and you can't power up with a known-good battery, it sounds like you have some sort of short or a failed component. This could be something on the motherboard or the graphics card, it's hard to tell.

Did you see any smoke, or smell anything like ozone/chemicals when it powered itself off?

No smoke or noise or smell. I just heard a small "tic!" and everything went black.

I wouldn't even refer to it as "powered itself off". It literally just died a sudden, very sudden, death.

This does not bode well, does it my friend?..... :nah:

Say.....do you know anybody who wants to buy a used g50VT for parts?..... :D

There's a chance clearing the CMOS would work if it's not hardware failure, but you have to take the keyboard and top case off to get to the CMOS battery. The reset button on the bottom doesn't always do it, but you should try that anyway by poking the hole labeled >o< with a paperclip and holding it down for 10+ seconds.

Yes, thanks to a thread on this forum I found that advice and have tried it. I removed the battery held the power button down for a while and then put a pin in that little hole and held the reset button down for more than 30 seconds.

I will have my son try the advice you give re the CMOS battery. He's pretty knowledgeable and handy with.......actually he's a geek, lol (I love geeks by the way) and builds PC's with a couple of his friends.

I sent him the link with the dis assembly guide which we will try I guess this weekend when I can get over to his house.

I do thank you for your attention, time and knowledge. Hope I can come back here with good news!

There's some pics of the chassis disassembled here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/327218-asus-g50v-boot-problem.html#post4228991

The whole screen doesn't have to come apart, but it may need to be unscrewed from the hinges and let to rest on the table in order to get the top piece with the palmrest off. Before that though the keyboard has to come off, which is a couple of screws on the bottom labeled 'K' and then some tabs. It's explained clearly in the disassembly guide but it doesn't have to be followed to the letter - you don't have to take the full thing apart, only the top portion of the case.

You should really make sure your charger works before you mess with things, did you try the multimeter? Or maybe someone else has a charger that will fit, just make sure the voltage supplied is the same.
