I own an Asus G50vt-x5 with a 512mb nVidia GeForce 9800M GS. All hardware is stock, no mods.
So about a week to a week and half ago, I started noticing these random magenta-colored pixels flashing on my screen. Sometimes, they would last for hours, disappear for a while, and come back the next day. Here are some pictures taken from my phone:

I am currently using the official 195.62 drivers from nVidia and they have worked great for the last 6 months. I don't remember changing any drivers or software during this time period so I don't think its software related. I tried updating my nVidia drivers to the latest 258.96, but the problem didn't go away.

Today, while web browsing, I started getting these horizontal green lines flashing in places on my screen wherever the background color is black. It looks like something that came from the Matrix lol

Sometimes, the pixels disappear if I close the lid and reopen it, but that doesn't even work anymore and the problem is becoming more frequent.
Yesterday, I connected my laptop to my HDTV via HDMI and I saw similar green lines flashing on my TV, so I doubt there is an issue with my laptop monitor.

Do you think my GPU is dying or there is some kind of loose connection in one of the cables?

And unfortunately, this is a best buy model (last time I buy a laptop from them) and the 1 year warranty is already 2 months expired. How much would out of warranty repair cost in the US?

As far as repair costs go, how comfortable are you working with a desktop? I do not feel that this notebook is hard to work inside, and if you can replace a CPU in a desktop, you should do just fine.

I don't really have much experience working with hardware parts myself. But if I'm certain that it's my GPU that's faulty, then I may give it a go.

I have had the same problem, it is likely the gpu, check your ambient temps and then gaming/media temps. Another possibility is a frayed LCD cable wire which is why titling/closing the lid can alleviate the problem. You should request an RMA post haste good chap.

These are my temperatures while web browsing, averages around 58-62C. Room temperature is 73F and I'm using no laptop coolers. Tomorrow, I'll post some temps while gaming.

Well, closing the lid doesn't even fix the problem anymore lol. Plus, it's out of warranty. Which model did you have?

I have a G50v-A1, The ambient temps seem fine, but pixelation on the USC banner makes me suspect a gpu failure, and are you sure you are out of warranty because during the g50 model run asus was offering 3 years, but aside from that good luck repairing it.

Best Buy models only get 1 Year through BB, no accidental or 2 Year available.

Running Left 4 Dead on high details, 2x AA, 1366x768 resolution. Screenshot taken about 15 minutes into the game. Temp maxed out at 100C... looks too high

Anyone think it's an overheating problem? I have never even seen the GPU idle under 50C..

100C is still 10C under the max the 9800m can tolerate before it throttles.

But compared to others from what I've seen, it should only max out around 85C. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the thermal module thats causing the overheating. This afternoon, my GPU was fluctuating between 65-74C just from web browsing alone. Right now it's stable at 53C, like it should be.

My GTX 260m idles in the forties. But my laptop is hardware modded and the chips is undervolted/underclocked in non-game settings.

But anyway, Flaze, my temppeen aside, I'm suspecting a GPU error. If hooking it up to an external monitor still results in visual bugs, it's not a problem with the display. Looks like a problem with the 9800m.

On a related note, my friend (who owns my old G50vt-X6) was having similar graphics glitches. However, when plugged to an external monitor, he had no problems, which would point to a bad display or display cables.

Not looking good in your case.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm gonna give Asus a call and send in my laptop sometime this weekend. Backing up all my data right now.

Hi, I have the same problem, asus support told me that it's the lcd signal cable.
    Did you solve your problem?
