    Hi Guys,

Thought i post this up as i couldn't find a definite answer on this as it took me ages just to find out the problem. Hopefully it will help someone else out there one day.

My laptop is a standard G51vx with a 260m GPU with a 4gb ram bought on Ebay newly refurbished from the US.

I tried to play/test out 3dmark06, League of Legends, COD, SC2 and even play videos on VLC and the screen will flicker and get this error message:

"Display driver stopped responding and has stopped
Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version XXX.XX stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

    I even sometimes get BSOD.

I tried so many different and latest drivers (including modified drivers) and also down clock/overclock the performance and have also reformatted/install fresh copy Win7 and Vista 64bit & 32bit and also its updates, but still cannot get rid of the problem. Oh yah also tried updating/downgrading BIOS still no go. Temps is also stable at 60-70 degrees and you can also sometimes run the windows experience index (Got score of 5.5).

Lucky a friend of mine had the exact laptop as mine but his is working well. So all i did was swap my HDD over to his and tested the games and it works fine!!!

So all in all im 95% sure that my newly refurbished G51vx 260m GPU is about to die and is un-usable for games ;(

Hope this helps you guys out there if you get the same problems as me.

BTW in Win7/Vista if you have Windows Aero turn off and set system to performance it will help reduce the error.

If changing drivers/downclocking GPU doesn't help, then it seems to me it's faulty video card. Strange thing is that this dreadful error usually can be remedied by downclocking the GPU a little.

If you can, I suggest you return it and demand a refund.

Have you tried other drivers? Try a 19x.xx or 26x.xx and see how it behaves.

Thanks for the reply... yah i tried like at least 8 different drivers that i download on the net (including tweaked drivers from laptop2go), have also done restore with factory asus cd and driver still getting the error message.

Some drivers work more stable and better then others i noticed but still didnt fix he problem. I thought down clocking should/will help but it didnt in my case :(

The thing is its gonna cost me an extra $100Aud shipping fee to send back even tho its still under warranty omg.... such a pain in the butt!

Asus is charging you for shipping under warranty? Does your laptop lack the 2 year global warranty because it was refurbished? I would contact them and demand that they at least cover shipping for your DOA machine. See what policies your reseller has on DOA's.

I do agree with everyone else...sometimes this is a driver issue or maybe even a PSU issue. However on a laptop its usually a hardware issue.

OK just an update..... it kinda worked out well at the end for me..... :)

I got a little refund back from seller and now my laptop has been repaired by Asus in Morley Perth Australia :D and what they did was replace GPU (Took them about 1week)

However when i got the laptop back the front case has a 1 inch scratch on it (wasn't there before i gave it to them) but besides that its all good

Been testing a few games so far and it has been great! temp max of 83 degrees and min 59 degrees on general use so overall happy with the buy and service by Asus.
