Just in the last 2 days, my G51VX-X3A has stopped having sound from the speakers. I can plug in the headphone and it works fine, but no speaker sound.
I did some searching here and found out about the headphone plug being stuck, but I've tried checking it and I can't really figure out if it's really stuck. I shined a flashlight on the plug, and there's a connector on the side of the plug near the back of the laptop that is sticking out into the plug. I'm assuming that's the "tell the system to turn off speaker sound" connector?
Any ideas what could be causing this?

You can carefully try this:
Stuck headphone jack / no sound through speakers -
I tried explaining my experience with that method in my post.
-
Funny...my G51j started doing the exact same thing yesterday, and I saw your post last night. Bottom line: it's the old stuck headphone Jack issue. I pulled every pin inside the connector out with a safety pin, and nothing worked. Finally, I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner onto a headphone Jack, inserted and pulled many, many times while I had some music playing so I could hear if the speakers came back to life, and they finally did!
The dilemma now is: do I never use the stock headphone Jack again and use my SoundBlaster expresscard if I need headphones? Or take my chances and keep using it? -
I tried doing that with mine. There is a small connector on the rear side of the laptop side of the plug sticking out, then very small connectors sticking out on the front side of the laptop side of the plug. I tried using a pin to push the rear one back but it won't move. Which one is the problem?

Which soundcard does the G51Vx-X3A have? I can't seem to find anything to say it.
Okay, I can't figure out which of the sound drivers are the right ones for my laptop. I think from Googling that it's a Realtek. However, when I try installing the realtek drivers, I get: Unable to find a compatible SRS Audio Device.
Working on flashing the bios as a last resort. Easy Flash says I'm running 205 which is latest from Asus' site.
Although, I found something out interesting. The Asus G51 has an Asus logo that has an explosion that plays during POST. That wasn't playing. so, I went in the bios and re-enabled it to play that sound and pumped speaker volume from 4 to 8. I rebooted, and lo and behold, that sound played. So...this must be a software issue.
This is troubling. -
Your Realtek chip is not a SRS version. Use the generic drivers from Realtek's site.
-
Gotcha. Installed it and now the sound device is Realtek High Definition Audio. Still no speaker sound.
Am I correct in assuming that if the POST sound plays, the speakers are still functioning normally? Ideas? -
check both your Realtek Audio app, and Windows Mixer to see if anything is muted.

Can't find anything.

There is a registry tweak to override the software headphone sense...
-
That works. It turns off the headphone jack and gets the speakers back on. Something is wrong software-wise that is keeping Windows from switching between headphones and speakers.
This can't be that I have to make a registry change each time I want to switch between speakers and headphones. At least we're getting closer. -

All that does is override the headphone sense in software. It's still more than likely a hardware problem.
-
Would a hardware problem disappear for the POST sound?
-

The POST sound always plays through the internal speakers.
-
I still can't find a solution to this. I've switched around Realtek and Creative drivers but I'm pretty sure this laptop has a realtek audio device.
Even if it was a hardware problem, where do I go from here? I've tried the pushing a pin into the headphone jack and I just couldn't figure out if there was a even a connector stuck.
Taking any suggestions on this. -
i have the same problem and it's even though i use speakers it's a shame that the speakers just flat out dont work anymore....could i get a warranty exchange on this laptop before september if my backspace, p, 2, 7 keys only work half the time, this speaker port doesn't work and the battery is at 50% wear. or would i need a more solid excuse for a warranty return?

I brought it to a local shop and they ended up replacing the board that holds the audio ports and usb ports. I took it home, and that night, they broke again. I took it back and they said they'd get the supplier to replace it and call me once it comes in. Apparently he didn't get it done for a week due to being on vacation. It's been about 9 days since he placed the RMA for a new one and still no phone call from them.

Okay, more updates 3 weeks later on this. I'm really trying to get this done and over with.
I brought it to the shop to get the no speaker sound working. They replaced the small board that houses the 3 audio connectors and 2 USB connectors. I brought it home, and that night, it started having the same issue as before....no speaker sound.
I brought it back, and had to wait 2 weeks for the part to be returned and to get a new one. Then they said they "lost" the cable that connected it and needed to order a new one. During this, I haven't been charged since the initial charge. I brought the laptop back and they put the new piece in this past Saturday.
I brought it home, and until today, 4 days later, it's functioned properly. I just started streaming a tv show, and it came on the speakers. I plugged in the headphones, and the sound is still coming from the speakers with nothing from the headphones. Nice.
I plugged the headphones into a DSi XL I just bought and they work perfectly. This is just....so intensely frustrating. I've had this G51 since November '09, and this issue didn't crop up until January '11. Where should I go from here or am I left needing a new gaming laptop if I want functioning sound? -

If you're having a problem after the board has been replaced, you should really rule out a software issue. Try booting with a linux livecd like Ubuntu and try your audio there.
-
Something happened and it's working fine before I got a chance to burn that Ubuntu. I think a reboot did something. Odd.
-
i'd really like to fix this problem without sending it in...i know that it must be a stuck headphone port since even when nothing is plugged in the realtek manager detects headphones. ive tried multiple times with a pin but to no avail, it still wont get "unstuck".
only reason im still using it is cuz i have my laptop basically setup as a desktop but if i were to send it in, would they just replace the board? i know my laptop also runs really hot and was wondering what hte chance of getting a new laptop is...
