So i got a ASUS G51J 3D like 6 months ago, but only recently i detected this problem,

if i leave a game open and i close the lid for a few minutes the laptop shuts down suddenly.

if the game is minimized nothing happens.

first i thought it was overheat, but i downloaded speedfan and enabled logging to check the temps just before the crash:

    86,0 GPU
    35,0 HDD1
    38,0 HDD2
    58,0 MB
    56,0 CPU1
    56,0 CPU2
    56,0 CPU3
    59,0 CPU4
    56,0 CPU5
    56,0 CPU6
    59,0 CPU7
    56,0 CPU8

... so i dont think its overheat, as its the same temps as with the lid open.

then i thought it was the graphic's drivers, downloaded the latest and still happening...

    anymore ideas?

Yeah, open up your Power Management (right-click battery icon... Power Options...) and select on the left side "Choose what happens when I close the lid" Edit it to "Do Nothing"

had the same problem...i kept having BSODs when i left the computer for a few minutes...that and i had many similar problems...ideally you should install a fresh copy of windows and all drivers manually but to solve your problem, upgrade power4gear to latest version

updated p4g from asus website and still crashing when playing with the lid closed.

my problem is very like this one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...own-suddenly-when-using-external-monitor.html

except im not using an external monitor, i just close the lid with the game turned on and after a few minutes...poof. also i logged the temps to a file to see the lastest temp right before the crash and it never exceeds 86~88ºC so i dont think its overheat.

i also dont think its BSoD

Yeah, the system is setup by default to go into Hibernation when you close the lid unless you change the settings.

This was a known issue with the other G51J* models, I'm not sure about the 3D. I think it's a power management issue, maybe with power4gear. I never had a problem in Linux, so I think it's not likely a hardware defect.

As for how to solve it, I'm not sure, you could try removing power4gear, or just not close the lid while it's on.

Wasn't there a hotfix for this? Have you tried SP1?

i use w7x64, the one it came with.

i never had this problem before, but now im playing games that i usually left running to complete stuff, tho if i close the lid for a while it crashes.

    i'll try to remove p4g
