Hello, I have a huge issue with my new gamer... Bought it about a week or so, it's a G51J-IX113V and oddly enough I can't install any games on it... -_-
I tried to install Dragon Age Origins and once i click Install game from the autorrun the computer just stops, nothing, it just stays there. The same goes for a number of other games such as Dungeon Siege 2, Diablo 2, etc, etc, etc... I've tryed updating my directx, turned off wireless just in case, i've reinstaled OS twice too and nothing worked...
Kinda sounds pretty stupid since its a gamer and all... Can somebody help? please? im going out of my mind! :(

So, it just stops? Does it freeze the computer right up? Is there any flickering hard drive activity? Does task manager indicate anything is going on? Does the install actually open up and then do the whole "Not Responding" trick?

It, quite literally, just stops. I can't do anything, ctrl+alt+del doesnt work, the only thing that does work is to shut it down manually :(
Just now i've tried to reinstall directx and run the setup in compatibility mode but to no avail.

Liek others said, most likely some bad sectors on the HDD.

If it is a G51J series, just make sure you uninstall the creative audio software and Sound Audigy software from the machine. Those will cause a freeze/lockup randomly on your laptop.

It's a well known issue from the G51J heh, well, not from the laptop but from the drivers it comes with from Creative.

Amazing... I've run into another of these lockups while installing dragon age, and after unistalling said crative software it worked...
Now I'm curious, why does the creative software cause these lockups?

Because you are running the Audigy MB package that the system came with. It is not 100% Win 7 friendly, which is why I am bugging Gary about getting the software updated.

    There are some workarounds:

    1) Enable CMSS-3D, and put it on minimum. This should avoid alot of crashes.

    2) Update to X-Fi MB package 1.1, which was modded to be Win7 compatible. This is trial, but there's info on this in another thread.

    3) Uninstall, and use Realtek's EQ for Bass adjustment.

Well I just unistalled it. Im using the realtek one which also came with pc and so far I've had no issues.
Thank you to everyone for the help. Thought I had to get me a RMA or something but everything seems to be working fine now.

You are welcome. There was quite a lot of G51 talk, troubleshoot etc back in the day. Feel free to PM me if you need help with it, I still remmeber part of the whole issues behind it.

Also, check your BIOS to have the latests ones from Asus, as they fix a BSoD problem with certain games (I think the latests was 208?). As a note: G51J and G60J are basically the same thing. The motherboards are all G60/G61, but the name G51/G60/G61 generally means the screen size, 50s being 15.6 and 60s being 16inch. I mention this because sometimes updates and stuff like that will have G61J or G60J under the system it's made for, and that might confuse you thinking it isn't for your machine.

Finally, J systems and Jx systems are different alltogether, keep that in mind when installing important things like BIOs etc.
