My laptop started freezing up and crashing randomly this week. I don't know what started it, but when I use certain programs like AIM or Steam, the laptop would just lock and I would have to hard reset it(hold power button). I uninstalled all the latest things I've installed, but nothing seems to work. I cleaned my registry and reinstalled the programs, but they still cause my computer to freeze up.

Does this behavior hint hardware malfunction? What can I do to try to fix this?I am still under warranty so I can possibly send it in to have it fixed, but I do not know the specifics of the program.

I have thought about doing a clean reinstall of Windows, but my other laptop has not come yet, so I would like to wait until the end of the week to try that.

Sounds like a definite software problem.

Then are you suggesting that I reformat? I would really like to keep that as a last resort.

I would definitely agree that sounds more like a software issue as opposed to a hardware issue. I think your best bet is to try reinstalling Windows to see if that fixes the issue since cleaning out your registry and removing the newest programs didn't help. I had some issues with Steam on my G51 that were similar and reinstalling the OS and the software took care of it for me.

I had random freezes (during idling and/or gaming) for a long time, went absolutely nuts trying to figure out what the problem was. I could go into detail but I'm a bit busy, so tl;dr: it ended up being a windows update and reinstalling windows did nothing for me. The latest Patch Tuesday eradicated the problem though, I haven't crashed in... forever it seems like. Try uninstalling a few Windows Updates and see what that does.

    Try removing your creative drivers.

At the moment, I am in safe mode uninstalling Creative drivers and other Windows stuff. This dumb thing has crashed about 5 times in 10 minutes. I am trying to finish myE schoolwork before the deadline tomorrow too! Argh

EDIT: I just remembered that I took a picture of a blue screen that occurred last week. I also hear "chirping" noises. I'm not sure if this is from my computer or not though, but it is definitely annoying.

If I remove Silverlight, would Netflix work still?

I'm not sure about that BSOD exactly but have you tried a memtest86+ run or two to rule out your RAM?

Also on the G51J* the razer drivers that shipped with it were known to cause BSODs. If you have the stock razer drivers, upgrade or uninstall.
