So I got my G51VX finally. Everthing is looking great so far. Except I can't get sound to work out of the speakers only with headphones so far ( Haven't tried HDMI ).

I've installed the drivers from the Asus website, I have used what windows installs on it's own and I have also went to the realtek website and tried those...

    Any ideas?

Ive had this happen as well. I use the method I posted here (post 33) to get the speakers working again. I only need to do this if I restart or shutdown but its ok if I hibernate/sleep.

Maybe I should try the reg edit method but doesn't that force both speakers and headphones on at all times?

yes it does. But you can just change it back if you want to use headphones..

That regedit fix causes the computer to ignore detection of headphones and drive sound through the speakers regardless. Logically, this means that if you switch to a different audio device--say, a USB headphone set--for your "default device" in the playback devices section of the sound settings, it won't be affected, and only that will play. Is that true?

I need to know because I have USB headphones and use HDMI to connect to my TV, so I am used to switching between sounds in the menu rather than physically, and wouldn't mind the registry fix. (I would have to switch to analog output anyway, since I use a USB headset.)

It wouldn't bother me as long as the sound doesn't drive completely regardless of the "default device." Can anyone give me input on this?

    FIX:
go into BIOS and apply these settings:
    POST Sound: YES
    Speaker Volume: 0

This is what I did to mine as I've just received my laptop a few days ago and had the same issue...

    ----------

However, I still cannot find a way to make the volume keys (up, down, mute) on the keyboard work... any ideas?

PERFECT! did this Bios tweak and now my sound has worked across 5 power downs/reboots.

    thanks!

    Thought I would Add:

To get the FN keys to work properly just install all of the drivers under the UTILITIES section from Asus, the ATK driver is the one that controlls the FN Volume keys etc.
