    Hi all,

It has been awhile since I last contributed to the forum. Have mostly been browsing these days. Today I want to share my experience with upgrading ~3years old laptop (in preparation for Diablo 3). *If you are in a hurry, skip to summary to tested part numbers*

I have spent hours researching the possibility of upgrading my G51 (best buy model, G51VX-RX5). With the help from another forum member Triddle, it has been concluded that the majority of the best buy G51 is shipped with a "single link LVDS" cable.

*More details about how to identify the cable here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/465074-g51vx-screen-transplant-success-3.html#post6938250

Not to my surprise, my laptop came with the "single link LVDS" cable (part number 1422-00GX000). Upon reading more towards the end of the same thread, another forum member mentioned a cable part number 1422-00GQ000 is the correct "dual link LVDS" cable.

So I went about searching for it online. It appears our laptop model is getting outdated and the part is not as widely available. I have a lot of difficulties locating this part number. Lots of website advertised having stock of the GQ cable, however email followups confirmed otherwise.

As I began to lose hope on this upgrade, I stumbled upon an ebay aunction selling the upper lid and misc parts of the G51 laptop. I inquired about the LCD cable that was included as part of the auction. The seller was nice enough to check for me and told me it's 1422-00K6000. The auction has quite a reasonable price. So I thought to myself, might as well buy one to try.

After I placed the order above. I stumbled upon another website that replies to my previous emails inquring about the GQ cable. I began to ask the seller to confirm if he has the correct part. The seller sent me a picture of a cable (with the label saying it's GQ). I was like, YES, this should do it. The cable costs around 50, shipping (to Canada) costs another 30. So the cable itself costs 80 in total. However, I still think it's worth it to get the correct cable. So I placed another order.

Upon receiving my second order, I quickly noticed they have sent me the wrong cable 1422-00GX000, which is the same as the cable that came with the best buy model. I quickly contacted the seller and he promised to send a replacement part to me. I received a tracking number yesterday for the replacement part. We'll see how it goes.

In the meantime, the "upper lid and misc parts" order came in. I opened the package, inspected the cable as instructed by forum member Triddle. It is indeed a "dual link" cable!!

So then, I proceed to order the panel from an ebay seller (who seems to earned quite a bit of favorable reputation here). The panel I order is B156HW01 v.7.

I received the panel yesterday, put everything in place (in addition to a SSD to replace my OS drive). The display looks stunning!. The laptop feels completely refreshed and I feels it is fully ready for Diablo 3!

    Summary (part numbers):
Original (single link) LVDS cable on G51VX-RX05: 1422-00GX000
FHD ready (dual link) LVDS cable part number: 1422-00K6000
Unconfirmed FHD ready (dual link) LVDS cable part number: 1422-00GQ000
    FHD panel used: B156HW01 v.7

    Side notes:
I have been testing extensively with GTX260m running in 1080p. As most users have noticed, the gpu runs quite hot in the default settings already. I suspect running it in 1080p will further stress the gpu. Hence I did what was recommended in the G51 Optimization Guide. Flashed vbios with max running at 0.9v. Lower my CPU (T9600, aftermarket upgrade) voltage to 1.125v.

The two combined seems to keep my GPU running at < 95c in full load in Dota 2, Starcraft 2 and Heroes of Newerth in 1080p/

Hope this post is still relevant and useful for some G51 owner who does not feel the urge to upgrade their trusty G51 yet.

How is this setup holding up? I have the BB model as well and was looking into this. I did find a cable but couldnt tell if it was the right one or not. I just know its not the same part as I have. My screen has a thick yellow line running straight down about the center and its driving me crazy. I figured at the same time I may could upgrade the screen if the GPU can handle it.

I was looking into that same cpu as well. Did you notice much increase in speed with that?

Thanks for posting the above info.
