As titled, so Im not sure if it is the laptop or the way I use it, but my refurbished g51vx is about 2 months old, here are the follow issues:
1. I notice that when playing games maxed out, it has gotten a lot choppier as i have overclocked it couple of time.( even Team fotress 2 on maxed out is choppy)
2. Recently the screen would go dark for 2-3 sec and then the message "display driver had stop responding and recovered" would appear at the bottom right.
3. and VERY recently my laptop had been really slow ( even on windows)
so Im thinking about upgrading my cpu to t9900 or something, but I have never done it before so I am kind of nervous, this is kind of a tough spot for me as I am not sure which of the issues above is caused by the cpu's lack of clock speed(2.0GHz), or if it is due to the fact that I overclock it too much. my warranty has expired so there is no way I can check if it is the GPU's problem, although I'd suspect that game got choppier while looking at open area and even slowing down in windows would not be a problem of the GPU but CPU?
Can you guys give me some suggestions? I am new to the forum so let me apologize in advance if I violated any rules or being a noob.
Also, Overclocking the CPU shouldn't damage the GPU am I correct?
-
I think the answer to 1 and 3 is:
The laptop probably needs to be cleaned out. Dust in the heatsink/fan is making it overheat. When the CPU and GPU overheat, they downclock, slowing Windows and games.
The "display driver had stop responding and recovered" message could be one of 3 things:
Its overheating badly, the driver is corrupt, or the GPU is failing. Try downloading the latest video driver from Nvidia, making sure you uninstall the current driver first(normally from the "Device Manager").
You should also consider re-pasting your CPU and GPU when you open the laptop up to clean it. I re-pasted the same laptop, and the temps dropped by 5-8C.
And, while overclocking you CPU doesn't always effect you GPU, in your laptop it will, as both the CPU and GPU are on the same heatsink. -
I see, well, I think maybe it just need to be clean up, the GPU overheating is probably the cause of 2 since I don't think it should be corrupting , i mean it's only 3 months old. Also I already tried updating the driver and nothing's happening.
How often should I be cleaning the cpu and gpu, and are there any tutorials on cleaning up asus cpu and gpu?
thanks alot for taking the time to answer my question joker.
also, let's assume the GPU is failing, what are the symptoms? Does 1 and 2 sound like it could have been cause by GPU as well? -
Here's a http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...8551-asus-g50-notebook-disassembly-guide.html
The symptoms of a fail GPU are: the driver failing and artifacts/lines on the screen, and I'm sure there are a few other symptoms.
I kinda doubt your GPU is failing, as it still plays games, just laggy. -
actually that's what happened to my old Asus n50vn laptop, the screen just constantly flicker and it was REALLY annoying.
once GPU fail, do you think the G51vx motherboard would support a higher class GPU that I can upgrade? -
The only card faster than yours that might physically fit is a GTX 460m from an Asus G53, but it requires 50% more power than your current GTX 260m. So, things would really heat up in your laptop, and I wouldn't recommend that.
If you video card is really failing, this would be a good replacement: ASUS G50VT G51VX G60VX NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 260M GPU | eBay
But, try the latest drivers and clean it out first. -
i see, but yea like you said it shouldn't be since im still playing, ima just clean it out and see.
, wut does it mean to re past a laptop?
also last question, how was your experience with this laptop?
Also I should have mentioned, the screen doesn't just go "dark", it is completely off for 3 seconds -
Re-pasting is replacing the thermal paste that is between the CPU and the heatsink. Same with the GPU.
Here's a guide on how to re-paste your laptop, but you have to make an account on that forum to view the pictures: Apply Thermal Compound to ASUS G50VT
I really liked it, except for battery life, I was getting about 2 hours. It played all my games great! -
after you upgrade your cpu(I assume you did). were there significant performance inprovements? what games do you play and how are they running on it?
-
I used it to play MW2, CoD 4, CoD 1, and Far Cry 2. I played for about 2 hours at a time. Ran those games in medium-high.
I actually never upgraded the CPU from the stock 2.13GHz one.
On my previous G50 I upgraded to a P8700 2.53GHz, and really didn't notice any difference in speed. -
ic
when i open the cover:
1. i notice there is a circular black tape that is covering the net on the cover, is it wise to remove it? i saw some youtube video that says it is not good
2. the fan is quite hard to remove as the wires connected to the board is hard to remove, should i force it? i think it is supposed to be removable
So, turns out there weren't much dust, the other dust i can find was a tiny bit on the fan itself. but it weren't bad at all.
do you think it is the way I play it? I usually play with everything on maxed out with youtube in the background for 3-4 or more hours.
but why is the window slowing down? -
Download the HWMonitor, it will monitor your CPU and GPU temps. Check what your computer is at when idle and under load.
I wouldn't cut out the circular tape, it improves air flow over the hard drive. -
my hwmonitor doesn't show me gpu temp, but for cpu temp weirdly they are the same , around 55-63
I would post the pic except for that my comp currently got a virus and don't let me upload jack -
Download HWMonitor 1.16, it supports your GPU: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
-
but does the cpu temp look ok tho? 55-63 while running tf2/l4d2 maxed out. weridly not much change during game playing or idle
56-61 when idle -
That's a little high, check out my http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/505552-asus-g51vx-overheating-fixed.html thread.
If this was my laptop, I would, pull out the entire heatsink and fan setup, clean it very well, and then replace the thermal paste. Make sure you use a little rubbing alcohol to get the old thermal paste off.
I use Antec Formula 5, as you find in the thread above. -
but weirdly the gpu is only 64 to 67 even when playing on l4d 2 maxed out.
do you think this might be a software issue?
or if the thermal paste would be the cause of all these lag? Because I just looked up on youtube and apparently for most g50 users they experience the same issue is that game started to slow down after couple of months -
If it's software issue, you could go to Nvidia and download the oldest driver available for the GTX 260m. Make sure you do a clean uninstall of the current driver by using the device manager.
-
other then the driver, do you think virus or the system errors can cause lag in gaming?
-
It could be a virus, that could be using all your system resources slowing your laptop down drastically. You should try re-install Windows. If there was a disk included with the laptop, use that. If not, you can download Windows 7 from Microsoft.

thanks alot, Ima do it right now and I will let you know if anything change in couple of hours
-
Sounds Great, Good Luck!
-
fixed my virus problem....but temp is still about the same.....
sound like a thermal paste problem to you?
Does firefox have anything to do with this problem? it doesn't make sense to me since the thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/458791-g51vx-cpu-upgrade-temps-before-after-pics.html
has a lower temp then me even with cooler off(cooler pad I assume?) while running l4d2
and I just ran portal 2 and temp went all the way up to 70....
But my laptop is only 2 months old, does it make sense to you that it needs to be repaste? -
70C isn't too hot at all, how is game play?
-
I tried portal 2 and it was about 40-50 fps (maxed out running in window and with youtube in background), althoguh it is still a little bit choppy , like it would lag when i move the mouse too quick and look at different envoriments.
tried assassin's creed, is back to the original performance now after I reinstall the window, so im sure it was a virus or something, but i still haven't tried tf2 or l4d2, so I can't say anything for sure.
Does the thermal paste have a big effect on cpu performance? -
The thermal paste would only affect game play if it was not applied correctly. Incorrectly applied thermal paste could make the CPU and GPU overheat. When they overheat they downclock, slowing performance.
But, I'm glad your problem is resolved, enjoy your laptop
And, as long as it still plays your games it's not too old
-
see it doesn't make sense to me because when I first bought this laptop it ran like a champ and i was playing youtube video and running l4d2 maxed out on window and it was smooth even during hordes.
but now it just turned really bad and it's not the dust in the fan, it's not software issue and I just don't understand.
I see, so there is no need to re-paste frequently?
actually the problem showed up again
, it's like occassionally it is slow and sometimes it isn't , this is just driving me nuts, I should have exchange for another one while i still have the warranty
