Hi im an owner o a G51j-A1 and recently while playing borderlands i have been getting BSOD randomly. Through further questioning on Pchelpforum somone suggested that this could be a bios issue. I searched on the asus forums and a few people reported having the same problems Anyone else on here having the same problem

Does this occur only during borderlands?

    And I'm assuming, since it's a G51J, that you have Win7. Yes?

Bortherlands was just release, so is Win7, maybe its the video driver. Update video drivers and monitor your temps see how is the G51J handling the game.

eh, BIOS problem. good to know i'm not alone :D

specifically, the error log bugcheck will say 4 0x# 0 0, implying a PCI-E (and usually GPU) error, but it works perfect on stress and benchmarking runs. usually the 0x124 (uncorrectable hardware error) stops are the most accurate ones, but in this case (i _ think_) it's actually trying to write to a BIOS-reserved address, and therefore gets the BSOD. no real problem with PCI.
windows XP ignores the write, so i would suggest switching for the time being until Asus releases a fix.

im by no means a debugging expert (but not too shabby with olly  ), so i suggest someone on windows 7 posts their crash dump (256k mini, change in advanced system settings) and submit this thread to Asus support.

for anyone on windows 7, theres no workaround i know of.

    edit: ***DRIVERS FOR XP**

for anyone using the guide below, note these 2 changes:
SATA: USE PCHM 6-PORT (BOTTOM OF THE LIST). THIS IS CALPELLA
    LAN: http://download2.msi.com/files/downloads/dvr_exe/Atheros_lan_vx_mb.zip
    SD/MMC drvers: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...p&id=20080407190227937&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

2 most important components changed ;)

afaict, its a bios issue. XP does not get the blue screen, but instead gets this in eventvwr:

EDIT: FOR ANYONE GETTING HERE FROM GOOGLE (hurray my post is #1 when searcing g51j bsod :D): SEND ASUS SUPPORT OR POST HERE WITH ANY INFO YOU MAY HAVE, INCLUDING SYSTEM + PROGRAMS + DRIVERS + GAME + WHAT YOU WERE DOING.

AS REQUESTED BY ASUS CC AND IF YOU CARE ABOUT GETTING THIS FIXED, POST YOUR DXDIAG AND EVEREST HARDWARE REPORT.

    what we know so far:
    i) not everyone seems to be affected -> lines are getting iffy, ryzeki is also BSoD'ing in Borderlands now
ii) the common stop code is 0x124/PCI-E
iii) BIOS 204/205 do not fix the issue
iv) windows XP does not seem to be affected
    v) list of games that have been reported to BSOD (but not limited to):

    - America's Army 3
    - Battlefield 2
    - Borderlands
    - Civilization IV
    - CoD4
    - CoD5 WaW
    - CoD6 MW2
    - C&C 3
    - Combat Arms
    - Crysis
    - Dragon Age Origins
    - Dragonica Online
    - Everquest 2
    - Fallout 3
    - GTA 4
    - Men of War
    - Oblivion IV
    - Resident Evil 5
    - Team Fortress 2

vi) creative and razer copperhead drivers can cause an 0x8E BSOD on XP and 7
vii) the issue was reported 2 months ago
viii) the unofficial response from asus of "memory timing" would make sense if it was also occuring on prime95 blend/3d rendering/CAD, but those work without a problem. imo, the respone is a pr tactic to stall a hardware recall/mass RMA
ix) the second unofficial response from asus of "nvidia problem" actually does make sense. low settings = low use = low chance. new chipset. win7 only. games only. PCI-e and certainly not the LAN card.
    x) 195.62 drivers do not fix the problem
xi) newest p4gh does not fix the problem

PM/REPLY IF ANY UPDATES SHOULD BE MADE TO HERE (THAT I SOMEHOW MISSED).

    ***
upgrading power4gear hybrid to the latest version on win7 is reported as a working fix (for some, or just making it less frequent).

No XP support officially, but noting it with the hopes our engineers can use for their debugging.

We will be gathering the information from the links you have provided, Thank you BTW. I will be updating this thread for updats on our end, also please post new information you feel may be useful in resolving this compatibility issue.

Asus CC, you have made my day :) i can now look forward to something better than the expected 50 in comp. architectures.

probably unrelated, as its only happening in cod4; stutters every few seconds until the fan spins up, usually after a minute or two. happens on XP (191.56) and Win7 (195.39) regardless of the setting in nvidia's control panel. no stuttering issues in other games, nothing in the event log.

i'll help with any testing/observing needed.

edit: 4 rounds on broadcast and 2 on crash (map, not bsod), still going. Combat Arms crashes within 3 minutes of joining a room every time, so it would be a more definitive test. <- windows 7

edit2: while on batteries (win7) ACPI thrml reports 0C? gonna doublecheck this with xp back home. 0 on xp and 7, batteries and AC. odd.

edit3: perhaps related, occasionally POST will hang for 10 seconds (counted) before the F4 message shows. trying with and without devices plugged in, happens at random. cold and re- boots.

I bought Borderlands for my G51J before I saw this thread!
I installed, and played for 10~30 minutes every time before it dies in BSOD.

Hope ASUS will find a fix promptly...

i suppose Eng has already seen this, but if the guess was up to me, here is the bug we are looking for (dmesg):

ACPI THRM is still being read as 0C, all systems (not related, but a minor annoyance):

ill attach full dmesg/syslog/debug logs on request.

just wanted to join in, I too get the same bsod when playing Fallout3 and Crysis, I was using the power4gear xtreme turbo when it happened, I'm going to try without the little oc, though I'm sure it won't help much  I've also been playing COD4, TF2, WoW and FEAR (1 :D ) but haven't gotten the crash yet in those games. Note: -Still using the stock installation of Win7, ASUS software etc.
    -Using the 186.81 nvidia drivers
ALSO Has anyone noticed the G51J-A1 product page on the US Asus site is gone?? I went there to look at driver/bios dl's and then when I re-visited a few minutes later I only see the G51Vx...just curious.

well at this very moment the deal is replacement but CS told me if it's not available then they'll offer another computer...

i wouldn't replace it if ALL G51J owners would have this BSOD problem while playing games but looks like only part of us face that disgusting issue... so logically it should be some manufacturer defect.

i'm a little bit disappointed with Asus TS cuz they seem to be not responding. i'm having 3 Asus laptops and this is the first time when their support is silent.

the bsod only happens in cod/combat arms for me. cod is a tossup, the few times i tried it, bsod'd after 10, 30, 70 minutes and once i went through enough that i quit on my own. ca will die within minutes.

crysis, fallout 3, and borderlands are also affected it seems, but i don't have them to try.

it does NOT happen under windows XP (pro/32). ive clocked over 35 hours since getting it on cod/ca in the last week, not a single bsod. even running the gtx260m at stock speeds is stable. if my guess on the bug is correct then we should expect to see a new bios some time early next week.

asus support being quiet is worrying, but it is the weekend.

i would also suspect that a lot of owners got the bsod once, maybe twice, and just dismissed it as windows7. 930 views for a thread with 20 posts is quite a bit.

well, I suppose I'll hold onto it for a while longer and pray for a bios update. but, the deal with an RMA, do I need to do it within a certain time after the purchase? (sorry I've never actually had to RMA any parts/computers before :p)

Why dont you guys give a shot to NVIDIA GeForce v186.82 WHQL Drivers, has worked really well for G51VX and now with G60s (better than 186.81), maybe could fix the stuttering.

no 186.82 on xp ;) i still get a bit scared each time i see the "uncorrectable hardware error" stop, so i don't plan on using win7 until after a fix. as was mentioned in the owner's lounge, it could be due to the i7's turbo mode, here im only making sure its not just me.

I've just got a reply from Asus TS.
I can't do cuz i've already sent it back to reseller.
So may be you guys may try:

    Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

Would you please reset your BIOS for a try?

    Shutdown the notebook
Start up the computer and hold F2 to enter bios
go to the exit tab and restore factory defaults.
press F10 to save and exit.

    ----------------

    1. turn over your notebook to the back where the serial numbers are located
    2. find a small paperclip "anything small enough to hold down the pin reset button located on the back of the notebook"
    3. find the hole and push down for 30 seconds

    * make sure the power cord is unplugged and that the notebook battery is not in the notebook * hold down for 30 secs the small hole in the back looks like a bow-tie circle in the middle with two triangles on the sides.

---- As well as call in for hardware realted services at 888-678-3688 option 3,2

If you continue to experience issues in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us.

the reset button's located in the hole on the bottom of the laptop so you'll need a paper clip or needle. all Asus laptops have that reset button.

found a pic of bottom... it's located near the sticker saying:
The lamp in this display contains mercury. Recycle or dispose....

a smaaall hole but big enough for a paperclip :)

    1) only User Defaults (which are overridable), restoring those didn't change anything (in the BIOS).

    2) is it just me or has that hole gotten smaller since the G50? anyways, there is no button at the bottom. i prodded around with a paperclip thin enough (go for the bare aluminum ones, the covered are too thick), only felt scraping like silicon.

about to give it a shot, but as it seems, nothing changed.

went through a round in CA without a problem, usually it stops after a minute or two...
early class tomorrow so can't try more now, but i will tomorrow.

Its not a button, its a tiny hole, on the G51VX it is directly below the touchpad. maybe a bit to the left. not sure about the G51j.

unless mine shipped without the button, poking the board + resetting user defaults still bsod's. CA went through the first round somehow, crashed today. cod stops after 30 mins or so.

    edit: i think i've figure out why cod might stutter;
run furmark (stress test) and prime95 (short fft) simultaneously. for some reason the i7 stays at the lowest multi (checked with hwmonitor and cpu-z).

Sorry to interject, not a big gammer and not a benchmarker. The reason I got the G51J was for FSX. FSX is CPU intensive. after doing some research, I used nHancer to set the CPU Multicore option to single core for FSX. I want the i7-820 running at 3.06 for this game, and not spread over 2 or 4 cores. My frame rates improved. It seams that some games do not know how to take advantage for the turbo mode in the i7. Need to do more research on the desktop version to see how others approached this problem.

Seems like its fixed on the other tread on the Asus forums. I'm going to wait until the weekends before updating bios just to make sure.

Btw upgrading bios won't delete anything right
