So has anyone found a way to turn these off?

If not, is there a way to "duplicate" battery mode while you are actually plugged in, so at least the side lights turn off?

mm, how hard is it to do that mod? I'm always scared of screwing something up. Its just opening the lid and unplugging the cable right?

It's straightforward, but you need to be gentle with the LCD bezel. There are 6 screws to remove, and there's some double sided tape near the webcam holding it in place. Just read the post... it's not complicated, but requires some patience.

You should be able to leave the cable unplugged without problems, as long as it's not in some weird position where it's going to get crimped.

After the screws the bezel comes off with some gentle prying, use fingernails or a medium guitar pick. You'll want something like a credit card (but one you don't care about since it may break) to separate the double-sided tape. Again do all of this gently and you won't run into any problems. The bezel is made out of thin plastic. Don't force anything.

about the rubber pads, does it need to be glued on? I just removed one of them and it looks like theres some residue on the screw. I dont want to remove them if they wont be able to fit back on.

I would not recommend gluing them since it will fill in the screw head. As I wrote in the guide, I think it's safe for one or two removals at best. There is adhesive on them, as long as it doesn't get dirty or come off, it should stick back on without any problems.
