For those students who own a G53, and take it to class with them.
How much battery life are you able to squeeze out of it.
I'm a computer engineering student and i'm just interested in how you hand the relatively low battery life.

Hello rot112, Im a Computer Science Major at CPP, and while I cant speak for G53 users, Ive been about to squeeze out about 4 hours and 15 min on my G73 (from the normal 2 hours) mostly by undervolting/underclocking my gpu, and underclocking my cpu. I would expect similar results on any/all of the G73/G53's if the same were applied to all of them.

Wow that's great, 4 hours is awesome. I am definitely gonna do that, I just have a few questions.
Do you make multiple profiles for when you want to game, so that you can amp up the power when you need to.
Can you gimme the programs you used to do this.
All I Need is a general breakdown of what programs you used and how you switch in and out.
Be it macros or profiles, any tips can help.
I'll be going out to college in less than a week. So I need to be able to do this when I get the laptop.
Thanks for your reply
bump, bump it up. -
anyone know what programs i should use.
-
a good 3 hours and 25 min is certainly reasonable for most though.
Well I cant help you too much, as the G53 runs Nvidia, and my G73 runs ATI so the programs will be different for the most part. Use MSI Afterburner to overclock/underclock your gpu and setfsb to underclock/overclock your cpu. Undervolting requires a modification to your vbios, i use RBE, but obviously that wont work for an nvidia gpu so youll have to google that one.
As for hotkeys ect. again I cant help much, I use AMD GPU clock tool, set up shortcuts on my desktop that activate upon certain key presses even while in game, for example I hit Ctrl Alt O for overclocking my gpu on-the-fly, Ctrl Alt U for underclocking ect...and yes I do use profiles, but again an ATI specific thing lol ATI Powerplay, im sure there is something similar you can use.
It would be better for someone with the jw version of the g73 or just the g53 to chime in with what they use. Anyways, welcome to the republic of gamersI love havin my G73 at college.

Take a look at nvidia Inspector for all your OC and profile needs.

wait wait wait...4 HOURS??????? (mouth crashing on the floor and making a huge hole and earthquake) How tha ........... is that possible??? I barely get 1.5h on power saving scheme...please oh please post a tutorial
-
well...I could, but all of its procedures arent for the faint of heart, in fact my second RMA was because of my bricking of the laptop while messing with the things you'd have to do lol and of course 4 hours isnt guaranteed, it really just depends on how far you can get your gpu/cpu underclocked/undervolted...and whether or not my storage of the battery in the fridge during both RMA's has anything to do with my longer then average battery life is also to question
lol
-
ahhh i see, so you basically underclocked the laptop so far that it couldnt even run the hardware...well anyways, i knew that when i puchased this G73 it wasnt for mobility or battery life but performance and thats exactly what i got. Thanks anyways
-
I wouldn't try to game on battery, but meh. One thing for sure though, the heat from the GPU when you game on battery will certainly shorten the life span of the battery.
-
Thanks for the reply everyone.
Sounds like it is vey do able, though I will not under volt. All I need is 3 hours really. I think I can everything downclocked, it'll just take a while for me to get all the profiles and macros working properly.
Thanks for the idea, now im more confident about my purchase. Loving the republic of gamers already -

no crappyalloy, im sure he meant cant run anything other than low end software, which is not the case.
It's just down clocked from its beastliness to a more moderate computer, just to save and hour or two of battery life.
