    Hey guys.

Getting a Asus G, just wondering about theese to compared:

    Asus G53-jw

    Specs: Intel i-5 460M, 4 GB 1033 Mhz Ram, Nvidia 460 GTX

    or

    Asus G73-jw

    Specs: Intel i-7 740m, 6 GB 1333 Mhz Ram, Nvidia 460 GTX

My question: Does the stronger processor and the faster clocked RAM have any significant difference when playing games? Usually its the gpu thats the bottleneck and thats identical along with the harddrive. What are we talking in terms of FPS gain here? I am nodding towards the G53 because of the size.

The performance gain in games of the g73 vs the g53 you mentioned above is close to 15%. I had the g53 version that you mentioned and as long as it has the FHD screen there is no need to worry about the cpu and ram frequency as it will handle everything just fine.
You might feel it's getting older in 1 or 2 years time.

Go with the G73. G73 cooling is better and there are also some other perks, like a better case. The G53 is matte plastic, the G73 is matte rubberized surface. And the surface is really nice! The LCD is better on the G73. We know the G53 uses the same LCD as MSI GX660. Some G53 users are happy, but I've read from plenty of MSI users who say the LCD is adaquate, nothing more.

The size difference between G53 and G73 is so minimal. The G53 is larger than a typical 17" laptop, that's how huge it is. Just go for the G73. If you really want a 15" machine, look at HP Envy or a 16" machine from MSI. Or if you can afford it, AW m15x is a better 15" machine or a 15" machine from Clevo. But Clevo's aren't laptops, they are strictly desktop, no battery life to speak of. Maybe the "new" models are different but the 2010 had 30 minute battery life. G73 if setup right can pull 3 hours.

I can handle the 15% decrease in performance. But what i am really wondering about is the ability to actually used the G73 in the sofa. I see that the G53 is just a little bit smaller, but I've grown very fond of the laid back gaming position. Is the g73 simply too large for lap(literally)top usage ?

I faced the same choice as you did and in the end i picked the smaller (and cheaper) version, the G53 with i5-460

What no one mentioned to me is the fact that the i5 version has only 2 dimm slots instead of the 4 that appear on (apparently) all i7 versions... so instead of 8+ GB of ram I'm running only 6GB (4+2) cause i cba to disassemble the entire notebook to reach the 1st dimm slot...

Ok, you g73 guys are doing a good job of making me fork up the extra 300 dollars so far. The added cooling is really making me sway. I have seen enough fried Dell gpus in my life.

Yes, definitely get the G73. Although in regards to Battery life, I definitely recommend you get Chastity's vBios. I went from a ~1hr battery life on power saver, to ~2:45 battery life.

You can grab a G53jw now with the full 2yr warranty from newegg at $1,200, you are going to spend at least $1500 on a g73jw (non A1 version, only 1yr warranty) so might as well use that xtra $300 for the upcoming amd fusion netbook

You can use it in your bed, on the sofa ...anywhere. As long as you're decently fit, then you wont feel any pain or discomfort.

Loving the feedback. Thanks for all the advice! :) I did swing by the whole Sandy Bay-debate however. Is it worth the wait? (Keeping in mind that it probably will take even longer for the SB-version to reach Norwegian shores).

If you can get a jw version at a decent price and don't hold your breath for the extra battery life, I do believe the SB is not worth the wait and you should go for a jw version

In the end it boils down to the following things, not necessarily in this order
    - screen resolution, the one with better res gets a +
    - your memory needs: if you are comfortable with 4 to 6GB of RAM, then g53 gets a +, if not g73 gets a +
    - price: if you are on a tight budget, g53 gets a +, if not g73 gets one
    - battery life: you will get better runtime from an i5

Then ask yourself if all those pluses manage to counter the size and weight difference between g53 and g73.
As I already said, I got the G53 and in my case the price, along with the smaller size, was the deciding factor.

They actually have the same resolution (both full HD). Does anyone know how much the extra cooling factor in the G73 is, or is that just based on guesswork and gut feel? Price isn't so much of a factor (thank you new job!)

The size difference (coming from myself as i owned both a 53 and now a 73) is only sizeable on the eye-o-meter as in real life the g53 has the same size as a regular 17" laptop and the g73 is just somewhat larger (~2cm in width according to the eye-o-meter)

The 3d version of the g53 comes only with the hd screen 1366x768. No fhd option on it.
And on some markets (as is the case here in Romania) where there is no direct distributin channel for asus products - just resellers - there is no g53 with a fhd screen option to buy.

I'm happy with my g73 JH. I figure if I'm getting a massive computer, I might as well go whole hog and get a 17 inch beast - especially since I've had a couple 15 inch FHD notebooks, and it's hard to recommend FHD on a 15 inch notebook for usability.

Actually, i am pretty sure this is a full hd version of the G53. It's the G53JW-SZ154V. But the sizing-issue is making me head a in the direction of the G73 (G73JW-TZ186V). I won't tug it around a lot and battery time does not really worry me that much.

    Oh yeah!
    I'm going Sandy Bridge: Komplett.no - ASUS G73SW 17.3" Full HD
Is it worth it at 150$ extra?

I use my G73 every day on my couch, and i think that a smaller laptop would be harder to use! The larger size makes it easier to stabilize as i need it, and more palm room for playing games and such (i like to hit up WoW while kicking back with the TV for instance).

And yes, if you can swing the extra cost, may as well get the Sandy Bridge CPU.
