I cannot believe how tinny the sound is on the G53 vs the G73. When I had the G73SW....I had to turn the sound down...it was too loud. With the G53JW...the sound is plain lousy. At 100% barely audible. Updated to the latest Realtek drivers and it didn't help...

Oh well...back to the drawing board. Gonna wait out the new G73SW's and see what happens...

Did you make sure to turn off the crappy Creative settings? I did a complete wipe when I got my G53JW and remember installing the Creative software and how bad it sounded afterward. I'm not sure about volume, but I know it applied a ridiculous EQ (the standard U shape that I guess software/audio developers think mitigates the limitations of small drivers).

I also know that, while Windows has somewhat improved its audio functions recently (starting with 7?), it now seems that volume levels can be buried/nested. Overall system volume can be one thing, the mixer can be another, and of course a program/game will have its own volume setting.

My G73 was one of the Sandy Bridge models. It was beautiful, fast and had pretty good sound. Perhaps the bigger shell made the sound resonate. Long story short...I returned the machine, not because of Sandy Bridge, but it had a defective GTX460M card that flickered. Now looks as though I will wait for the newer Sandy Bridge versions to be release. Hopefully in a few weeks. The tinniness wasn't half as bad as the fact that my five year old Dell Inspiron sounds better with it's cheapo speakers....louder.

My 5 year old Dell Inspiron 9300 speakers were really good also untill I blew them up while playing my music way louder than it should of been.

I get that. Funny...my wife was on the phone and thought I turned the volume down so she could talk. When she hung up...I had a CD playing...and she asked me to turn it up so she could hear it...was about 10 feet away...told here the volume was at 100%. Even when she sat in front of the machine...the volume was "somewhat" listenable...but I mean low. When I was setting up the G73SW, before I had to return it...she even remarked how nice the sound was...

You must be doin' something wrong.
My own g53 is quite vocal. For example wife had complains regarding the sound volume while i was playing a game and she was in the next room. I had to plug in the headphones... which ofc it was misinterpreted by her... but i won't go in details :D

I'm another owner of G53JW-XA1. Granted, the sound volume is much far away from making me satisfied. But imho, the issue is neither the Realtek sound card nor the Creative software. It's speakers. The built-in Creative softwares are only Alchemy and THX Studio which makes no significant impact on sound volume. But the speakers are sooo tiny for a gigantic notebook. Somebody said that speakers are Altec-Lansing which i don't want to beleive.

My uncle has Toshiba bought for 600 dollars less than mine G53JW, it has the "same" Realtek audio codec but the sound volume level is awesome.

For a gigantic notebook, putting these tiny speakers to a gaming machine is a shame of Asus.
