    Hmmm

G53 vs G73 (as you said size is not an issue): G73 because it runs cooler and is easier to get at all of its components.

JW vs JH: Well if you hold high value to 3D (internal screen or external one) and USB 3.0, then the JW. Speaking from a strictly gaming standpoint, imho, I would still go with the JH and 5870.

If size is not an issue then the G73JH hands down. It may come with a few problems but the power and performance are worth it and as mentioned above it is far more accessable than the G53 and runs cooler. I have never been that happy with 15 inch screens even with high resolutions you cant beat having a good 17 incher (pardon the pun). I would expect the prices to be very similiar as well however even with the 5870 your still getting better bang for your buck.

Well, the G53JW is rather trouble free... If you are the type that likes troubles and troubleshooting you may as well pick the JH.

For example, I'm on the lazy side and I prefer to spend my free time playing on the laptop instead wasting time fixing things that should actually not happen (gsods, bsods, thermal shutdowns, etc.). Also since Radeon 8500 and a really bad set of Catalyst drivers (2.8 or 3.something) i never gone back to ATI products. Yea, I know I'm biased. *shrugs*

I bought the G73JH without a bag. size didn't matter to me but now i'm having problems on how to bring this big chunk of machinery without getting noticed by eyeful thieves lurking around. :p better get a bag for that g73 ( if you're not planning to buy a new one like i did)

thanks for your replies guys. i currently have the G53jw but never use the usb 3.0 and since it never leaves home id like more retail screen space for my photo editing. plus the gaming bonus with the 5870 rather than the 460m. got a local here selling the G73 for a deal and i think i'll be grabbing it today and posting my G53jw for sale.

The casing is suttle but the shape of it definetely gives away its a G series gaming laptop :) the fans the size of a F22 dont help either. I kept my bag from my G70S as its so much nicer than the cheap ones you get with the G73 its worth searching about for one.

Depending on what BIOS and VBIOS and Drivers its running you may need to do a bit of tweaking as mentioned in so many posts there are a few issues that are a bit annoying but it doesn't affect every laptop. I myself got a deal like you only a week ago but once you have everything sorted and working and play about with the drivers its a fantastic machine.

yea i definitely don't mind putting in some work to making the laptop work perfectly. i plan on changing out the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu when i get it. updating the vios and vbios isn't a big deal as well.

i came from a m17x fully loaded with 920xm, xfire 5870s and the G53jw with the 460m just isn't cutting it for me. the gaming aspect is huge for me and i think i'd benefit more from the 5870 than the 460m.

^might I ask why you made the change from m17x to G53?

EDIT: or even why you got rid of the m17 at all? lol

at the time i was traveling for work and bringing that thing with me everywhere was such a hassle. so i decided to downsize while also making a pretty good profit on selling the m17x and purchasing the G53. gotta say though, theres no machine out there like that m17x fully loaded. its just a beast.

M17x features and casing are next to none :) but the Asus just brings all the power and sticks it in a suttle case with class curves and angles. At the end of the day flashing lights dont give you more FPS I realised that after I got rid of my G70S.

Except Clevo. And Apple. And, on the high end, HP.

Unless you're specifically talking about the individual keyboard colour zones. Which is neat, but not a $500 feature.

Really? Clevo is bulky apple is massively overpriced and a bit like nike for what you get for your money and yes I suppose I agree with the HP Envy models :) they are smart.

Exactly my point $500 for a fancy colour case nice shape and multi coloured keyboard is ott but they dont care because people pay it, I was sucked into the pretty lights and exhaust of the asus g70 but luckily got it on the cheap.

    ^^

    Thats up to date.

Hmm try blowing out the vents? If that doesnt lower it then maybe he was selling it because he knows it needs a new paste job

Im assuming youve also updated the BIOs to 211/213 and to 11.x CCC

also ive been searching but i tried putting in an older 500gb hard drive i had but it does not show up in windows. i remember when i had my m17x i used this 500gb in a raid 0 config but i never deleted the raid 0 array. when i go to computer manage the disk shows but its offline and shows it as being 931gbs which im pretty sure is the old raid 0 array. can anyone help me reset this hard drive so i can just use it by itself?

^^^ Sound like U R trying to convert dynamic disk to basic. This link explains what to do
    Manage Disks
If this link, does not do the trick, I would guess a low level format may be needed, Try the HD manu. web site to grab a tool that will do this in DOS
(not to point out the obvious but you will loose all data on the 500 G drive).
