I have only had this computer a month if that and now its dead. I was using it today when all of the sudden it just shut off. There was no warning, no BSOD, or anthing just shut off like it has a lack of power. I tried to turn on and nothing. I get the bios screen, I can enter the bios, I can change the boot option, when it looks like its going to attemp to start loading it shuts off. I tried to see if Express Gate would work and it does the same exact thing. Any ideas? Im in Iraq. I never get the windows 7 screen that shows its loading or anything.

If it's turning off suddenly and without warning it's probably a hardware issue somewhere, but it's hard to say where.

Have you tried it without AC power, and then on only AC with the battery out?

Try resetting the BIOS to user defaults...

You can try taking out some of the memory modules to boot with 1 at a time to rule out a bad stick. That probably wouldn't cause it to just turn off though...

If you can let it cool down for a bit and then try it again you'd be able to (mostly) rule out a temperature problem.

    1) Do the HDD's show up in BIOS?

    2) Take out the battery and try it on AC only.

    Sorry I left out details.

I have tried to just boot with only the battery

I have tried to boot with only AC and no battery.

I have two hdd both with Windows 7 that will boot. I use the esc key to select which to boot from but doesnt matter shuts off after either one. I am certain its not a HDD and I almost want to say I am certain its not a memory issue either due to the fact there was no warning at all of any issues after getting everthing stable, just all of the sudden died. I was only watching a video I have downloaded. It doesnt seem to be running hot, the laptop is barely warm to the touch, now it feels cold again. I did attempt immediatly to enter the bios and when I could, I did reset to defaults to rule that out as well.

I guess Ill be calling Asus now. :(

Both HDD do show up under Sata configuration of the bios. I did also try the battery thing without any luck.

You can try booting from a CD or USB stick to rule out the hard drives. You've already tried express gate so it's not a windows problem. I'm not sure what else to recommend short of ripping the thing apart and checking it out, but since it's under warranty and not the most friendly of machines to open, it's hard to give any good advice.

I agree, try some bootable external media and see if you can get that started. If you can, then at least you can try a reinstall, or perhaps you got nailed with some malware and it toasted your MBR.

if this is the case then wouldnt my 2nd hdd boot. I could always select it before by using esc during boot up and it would load windows 7 fine.

Maybe something is up w/ the Intel SATA controller (where it only detects but can't really load anything).

Does it power off by itself if you are in the bios?

if it shuts off right after exit BIOS it could be the fan is not running, check to see if the fan is working in the BIOS.

It sounds like it is shutting off due to temps. It could be the fans are not functioning at all. You may have to physically try and see if air is coming out of the exhaust vents.

You can use your hand or a piece of paper to track movement of any air.

Just stay in the BIOS for maybe 10 minutes and if it the CPU/GPU gets warm the fan should kick in.

Tried it this morning and same thing, it was cold from sitting overnight. I know one fan is definitely working.

If only one fan is working then probably the one for CPU is not working, therefore, it shuts itself off to protect the CPU.

I know one is for sure, its really hard to tell you cant really hear them, even before you really couldn't. Only feel the hot air blowing out without getting to the OS its not even really heating up.

I did, got an RMA. I am in Iraq so I had to mail it using USPS (APO). It will more than likely take two weeks for them to receive it.

    Hey friend.

Mine died today exactly as you described here. You click on the power button, it power up, the keyboard just blink and it turns off imediatelly. (everything take about 2 seconds). The problem is that I live in Brazil and I just find that Brazil is not eligible for the "Asus Global Warranty".
How did you proceed with the Warranty ? Is Iraq eligible for the fake global warranty ? Did you found what was the problem with your computer ?

    Thanks,
    Amid

I am not 100 sure exactly what the problem is. Its either the sata controller or the motherboard. I live in the US and I am working in Iraq so I just mailed it stateside and they will ship it back to my stateside address.

Two weeks to send, Four weeks to fix, Two weeks to find what pile they put it on after they fixed it, and another week to decide how to ship it.

GL getting it before the warranty wears out :(

Sorry just griping @ Asus's slow support process. I think they need to officially announce a recall on these laptops and replace them all out with a more compitent version.

Today my laptop come back from the repair and I found the problem. This should be a warning to all current and future owners: This model (G53JW-A1) suffers the same plague that more and more notebooks are coming with. Thin BGA Solders (a lot of HP owner had nightmares with those ones).
My computer seems to be ok now (more tests needed, will play some heavy 3D game to check it) but the technician didn't place the palm rest correctly, so now I have to take it back there or fix it myself. I remember seeing a guide about how to open it in this forum, right ?
Costed US$200,00 to fix (no warrant where I live). Also, if HP didn't recall the DVx000 series, I wouldn't bet in Asus recalling this one.

lol I've had 2 DV series laptops that died, just like that. Good thing they were in warranty when I had them (well, one got teh warranty extended after it did, I just didn't send it in for work for another 2 months after buying the extended one).

I wish asus would do post-purchase warranties. Dell and HP do them, and they're GREAT.

Asus has had my laptop for at least 10 days and counting. I call and the status is "in repair". It would be nice to have it fixed soon and mailed back. I am still really ticked three weeks old and dead, nice quality there. I had to laugh when I called Asus there automated message states they have the most reliable computers. They should seriously have a recall on these computers.

ASUS Sucks! RMA / Warranty process is horrible. Everytime I call over the past month and ask for the status and the exact answer I get is "your notebook is under repairs" so I ask to speak to a manager and it doesnt happen. Of course my notebook is under repairs it was sent in for that! How long does it take to change a sata controller or motherboard. Seriously they could have sent it to me and I know withing a few hours I could have had everything back together without any issues. I will be calling back tomorrow and speaking to a manager after I cool down this is just complete bull crap. $1500 for a computer that dies after three weeks and is in RMA 1 month and counting.

I sold it to a close friend, I will let you know what he says. Its fixed now, not saying it won't break again. Before I could only get it to load the boot (bios screen) only and then it shutoff immediately if it attempted to load any of the OS even the quick boot software. The computer loads up now and runs without problems.
