I recently sent my laptop in for a bit of repair, and when I got it back, there was a rattling coming from inside that sounded like there was a loose part rolling around. I didn't think much of it, but the other day I tilted it, and the part rolled into the back fan on the right side. Now it overheats after a little bit of use, and games are super slow.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to access the back fans incase there's just a piece lodged in, and I can fix it at home. Would prefer not to send it back so soon.

    Thanks!

Another hilarious attempt by Asus to repair a laptop.

I expect they left a screw inside that they did not return to the motherboard and you have most likely sheared off a blade of the fan if it was spinning around 2500rpm

Worse case scenario it has actually jammed the fan and busted the motor but you might be lucky and it has just lodged in the fan but I doubt it and you most likely need to get a new fan in there asap. They are quite cheap but it requires a total dissassembly to remove the fan from the heatsink.

If you can't do it yourself and your in the UK pop over and ill sort it for free :D if not RMA it again and give them a piece of your mind.

Aw damn, was hoping it would be an easy fix. Thanks for the offer, but I'm in the middle of nowhere Canada, so I guess I'll RMA it or take it to the local computer shop.

It should be an easy fix for a computer shop though, right?

Whatever you do don't take it to a local computer shop. Tends to tick off the warranty department, best case call up asus and say hey its not running right and i think the repair was unsuccessful and would like you guys to do an rma again.

You had an issue with the Markham RMA? Sad. They're supposed to be one of the best. I'd be more likely to recommend fixing it yourself, all told. RMA if you aren't comfortable though.

Even good RMA centers will do bad jobs sometimes, nothing is completely flawless. If disassembly is anything like the G73, it's a PITA to open up but it's not that hard.

    Hi there,

I was reading your back fan problem until now... maybe long time :p

I have a G53JW-A1 which I purchased in January 2011. Today in the morning (almost 1 year later), I turned on my laptop but noticed it got stuck in the log in screen (Win 7) and the hard drive was making noise as it was reading stuff but nothing moved.

I put my hands on the back of the laptop to feel the fans working and only the left fan was working!

So I turned it off went to do some stuff and when I came back, the screen was off, but I could still hear the fan working?!!

So I had to remove the battery and then the laptop finally turned off. Then I turned it on lie 10 min. later in safe mode and it was ok. So restarted in normal version and it was ok, however I switched from higth performance mode to entertainment or office mode to make the fans work less just in case.

So now everything is working ok so far, but the right fan is working but not with the same intensity as the left fan. I kind of remember that both fans were always blowing / cooling at the same rate, so now I am affraind that one fan the right one, will fail and my laptop won't turn on.

I am in Mexico so it will hard or impossible to send the laptop for service, which I don't trust really + the lost time on this would affect me greatly for business reasons.

So, as I used to repair some desktop and laptops, was wondering:

    1) Do you have any idea on what could this mean? One fan working more than the other one? Is it normal?

    2) I am going to San Diego in the US pretty soon, so do you know or have any idea on which fans are the replacement ones? Or where or how can I get them if needed?

Many thanks for any input on this and thanks in advance!

    Cheers

    Hector
