When the machine arrived, sound was fine.

after installing an SSD, (removed original drive) and doing clean install of windows, plus all the drivers from ASUS driver DVD... the sound is DISABLED.
Device manager shows TWO HD-audio codecs with one of them 'yellow-flagged' ( "cannot start"). The other is normal.

BTW, a subsequent clean OS install shows the same picture BEFORE attempting install of ASUS sound drivers.

Right now I'm installing the latest Greatest NVIDIA vga driver set - and this includes "hd-audio" drivers. Not sure if its a good idea, or not....

**EDIT: same problem after installing nvidia drivers. Should I uninstall them before attempting to install the RealTek driver??

The "hd-audio" drivers supplied with the Nvidia driver pack are meant for the audio output from your HDMI port. That has nothing to do with onboard audio. The realtek audio drivers required for the G53SW are part of Windows 7. So there is no need to install the one on the disk. If you're having trouble with audio, you can uninstall the drivers from the disk by going to Programs And Features in the Control Panel. Then go to Device Manager, right click the 'Realtek High Definition Audio' under 'Sound, video & Game controllers' and uninstall it. Then you can go to 'Action' menu and select 'Scan for hardware changes'. Windows will now pick out the drivers from it's installation and install them. Your sound should now be fine. To check if everything is right, go to 'Sound' in Control Panel and set the 'Speakers' to default audio output. I hope this helps.

You do need drivers for the sound to function properly. The Win7 default drivers don't. Check the link in my sig for the latest driver.
