Here is the Asus ASUS G53SX-DH71 - XOTIC PC - Republic of Gamers Laptop

    M14x has the GT555M

M17x has the GTX560m (for budget reasons)

I have long had an Alienware and loved the quality I got with it. Is Asus good quality and should I buy the G53x as opposed to another Alienware or MSI brand?

My question is what do you want from the notebook?

If upgrade is one of the things the AW or other brand.... if a working notebook for modest gaming and work then asus is a good machine. It does not weigh as much as the R3. In my opinion the M14 is a bit pointless for the price.

About size then it think the R3 and G53 are almost the same size. The G7X is a lot bigger then the R3 :D

Its all upto what you want from the system. If you plan to swap again soon the R3/R4 or wait for the new G series from asus.

Well I mainly want to use it for gaming. I need it to be able to fit on a lapboard since I lay on my bed and game at night. It has to have lighted keys since I game in the dark mostly (I work 3rd shift so my nights off are like at 4am lol).

I will be playing BF3, MW3, SC2, SWTOR, WoW, Mass effect 3, etc.

I am mostly concerned with realiability and sturdiness. I want it to last at least 2 years.

Dont get the SX. I like my G73 with the 460m, but I already want to get a higher end GPU. but I also liketo game on max settings and 60FPS. If you like medium to high settings then go ahead, but for the money I would get something with a 6990m or 580m.

    just me.

Well looking at how things are going then then with the G73 you have missed the buss. in 2 years i will rund most games on max but if you add all the AA and other eyecandy then you will get low FPS. Even with skyrim if you add all the HD stuff then it is the mem amount that will get in the way.

If you want cheap and an option to upgrade then i would say MSI has a good option as the notebooks are cheaper and most part are not integraded so you can swap them. How well do they work ? ...no idea might want to look in the MSI section of this forum.

Most of all the gaming brand notebooks have lights under the keys.....but if you want a christmas tree all the time then the R3 is for you :D. I think the latest MSI has someting similar to AW lights.

I'm confused why you are singling out the G53X instead of the G74SX.

I have not been overly impressed with the 555m, it's what I would consider 'entry level' gaming GPU.

If you are looking at the M17x then you might as well grab the G74SX.

I've service a number of Alienware in my time and it seems that the quality of the units is going downhill the longer Dell has control over that brand. Dell also has been using the same chassis for years now.
