Hey, not sure if this forum is the right place to ask but I have a question. I have gone through a read a bunch around the web and am still a bit unsure. I have on my desk a 560m that I took out of a broken g53sx-a1. There seems to be a great deal of conflicting information out there, several threads I've read state that g53 cards are all soldered to the mainboard. However, the gpu sitting on my desk says otherwise. I also have in my possession a functional g53jw-a1 which I successfully repaired. Is it possible to replace the JW's 460m with the SX's 560m?

Depending on system bios constraints since that is where asus likes to put the video bios.
-
Is it possible to upgrade the system's bios?
-
Hello. It is real possibility that it will work without any mod neccessary. That said it is not any cost to try as you allready have 560m in your possesion. That said everything is possible I managed to merge g73jh bios with one of g73jw and got clone g73jh/jw that works with nvidia gtx 770m now.
I say go for it and post here if you experience troubles or hopefuly everything goes smoothly -
Is there any possibility that doing this will damage the laptop if installed correctly? If I go through this and the 560 doesn't register with the system, will swapping the 460 back in return functionality? I guess, what should I expect? Because as far as I can tell this is a path not well trodden.

You will not damage anything as long as you dont shortcut something or phisicaly damage gpu or mobo. If it does not work you will most likely get black screen with fans on max. But I am pretty sure it will work.
-
What about swapping the processors? I'd rather have the SX's i5 over the JW's i7.
-
I am afraid that will not work. Atleast not without updating bios with cpu microcodes.
-
Alright I'm going to go ahead and try it. Thanks for the help.

You are welcome. Keep us updated.

Ok, so I just performed the swap and neither speccy nor device manager is recognizing the card. Where do I go from here. I'm certain that the card is seated properly. Should I do a clean installation of windows?

Im sorry. Can you explain that a little better. I am unsure of how to find the device id when the gpu does not show up in device manager. Under 'other devices' there are a few pices of hardware that are giving errors: "pci device", "pci simple communications controller" and "unknown device". Speccy is a program that lets you view device cinfigurations and temperature.
-
It should be under display adapters. As for modding video driver it is that you need to add your video adapter device id string to nvamn.inf file to be able to install it.
-
Thats the thing. The only device that shows up unde display adapters is "standard vga graphics adapter".
-
Yes and when you right click on it and choose properties. and scroll down to details/hardware ids there you will find your gpu hardware id that needs to be added to video driver for installation.
Here is LINK with guide how to mod your nvidia video driver: Removed as it is for desktops and is somewhat confusing.
This one is better as it is focused on laptops: http://forum.techinferno.com/nvidia/5249-[guide]-modding-nvidia-oem-inf-files.html -
Ok sorry if I'm being dense, this is my first time doing something like this. I'm more of a hardware oriented guy. When I right click on "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" > properties > details tab > hardware ID from the drop down I get this:
(
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_000010DE&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_000010DE
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&CC_0300
)
Does this look like what I need? I found I guide that should be able to help.
And really thank you for helping me with this I really appreciate it. -
Just study guide from link and you will learn how to mod it.
Welcome again.
And you will be glad that you did it yourself -
Just wanted to say thanks again! I feel like I've done the impossible. The computer is now recognizing the 560m. Woo!
