    Hello there,

I have a G53jw and I am very content with the laptop. I have had it for almost 2 months and just like my previous Asus laptop, I had to fight with it since problems started rising where the laptop would just freeze (while idle, gaming, surfing, no specific reason and definitely not heat related).

I tried tackling the issue and uninstalling programs (such as the Asus utilities) to see which is the culprit in making the laptop freeze. The freeze happened so frequently and uninstalling programs just didnt fix it.

I tried updating BIOS to 211, but problem was still there.

After giving up, I did a clean install of Windows 7. I reinstalled everything the same way my laptop was before I did the fresh install.

Before doing the fresh install, I remember having updated my nvidia drivers to the 267.76. Then it just hit me, what if all my freezes just happened after updating that nvidia driver.

    Older Post :
So after the fresh install, I tested it, and just as I thought, after updating the driver (to 267.76) the laptop started freezing again. To validate that, I went back to a restore point where I had the older nvidia driver (one provided from Asus Support Downloads) and the freezes disappeared.

Now that I found that the Nvidia driver update was the cause of all issues, I am kinda scared to update my nvidia drivers to a newer version (270.61 WHQL).

So my question is: Does anyone know of this issue (updating causes freezes)? Would it be ok if I update the driver and then do a system restore in case it freezes, does the system restore bring back everything the way it is or would the freezes stay even with restore point?

I am finally happy the laptop doesn't freeze but I noticed some differences in the temps and graphics when I was using the freezy 267.76) as compared to the current one from nvidia (261.14).

    Please advise and thank you.

Using system restore is a terrible way to fix things. A fresh install is much better.

And any software changes can be reversed with a fresh install.

You'll find the 270.61 package a nice one. Download and try it. You'll like it.

Thank you for the replies DCx and Chastity.

Haha, i want to try to download the new driver but still hesitant.

Any more ideas, is backing up the system on DVDs better than making system restore?

I can't help you if you are given a solution and you choose not to utilize it. Sorry.

As for making a backup... forget optical discs. Use a USB HDD and make a proper partition image. I use Acronis, but there are free options if you want, like CloneZilla.
