I purchased a G53sw a little under 3 months ago. Its worked well but the last week I've had issues which are baffling me.
Sometimes while playing a game I'll get graphical artifacts in the form of red pixels, they aren't completely random and conform somewhat to whats displayed on the screen, affecting only certain colors. The artifacts aren't confined only to the game and will persist if I tab to the desktop, but again they appear to affect only specific colors. White backgrounds will become a bluish color, darker regions will become red.
It seems to be triggered by heat. If I run Furmark it will happen around 75C and persist until the temperature drops a bit below that temp. The trigger temperature isn't almost the same but within a few degrees of 75C. The artifacts do not appear gradually but will come and go instantaneously.
Now the strange bit is I've tried taking screen shots to show the artifacts but its impossible. I made a FRAPS recording but it does not show any artifacts. Additionally, if the laptop is lifted, even the tiniest amount, the artifacts vanish instantly. My current workaround is placing a napkin under the front of the laptop (its on a hard flat surface). So far this has prevented any additional artifacts but they will appear again quickly if the napkin is removed.
So I guess my question is if anyone knows what could be done about this. It seems there's a faulty connection between the gpu and display, but I'm clueless as to why the napkin workaround works. If anyone has any insight it'd be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

i dont think it is overheating issue as my gpu gtx460m on asus g53jw runs 85c on stock clocks and 93c overclocked, and nothing happens.
i think it is either your drivers or your gpu itself is defectivedunno i am not sure tho.
good luck.
also you can run FURMARK, and you will see the tempratures if it go over 75c and this thing happens again (while running furmark) then it is your gpu.
hope i helped -
The GPU was my first thought too but I don't think that's the problem. I can reproduce it with FURMARK, but the evidence is not shown in FRAPS recordings, they look normal on playback. I have not tried hooking up an external monitor, I will do that tomorrow, but I suspect the artifacts will not be visible on the monitor.
As with the napkin workaround, I've noticed occasionally the artifacts can be controlled with the angle of the screen, but not as reliably as with the napkin. The connection between the display and motherboard or GPU (I'm not exactly sure how its all connected) seems to be faulty and sensitivity to thermal expansion, as iffy as that sounds. -
maybe then RMA time ? XD

Normally artifacts are caused by heat and not driver.
But what you are describing doesn't sound like heat related artifacts.
Something could be loose. You might have to RMA or check it out yourself. -
I have seen similar problems on my G53SW as well. Random dots popping up on display and Win7 watchdog killing and restarting the display driver after GPU hangs. Reboot usually solves the issue.
OCCT and Furmark are stable so it doesn't seem like overheating problem. The problem seems to be happening mostly after I leave the laptop running with the lid closed for extended period of time, like over the weekend. -
I'm still not sure what to think of it. When I wrote this post it could reliably be replicated by using Furmark to heat the GPU, but sometimes I'll play a game for a few hours with no problems even if it had caused problems in the past. The next day it'll be back again.
I'm tempted to open up the laptop and check the ribbon cable. Does anyone know how difficult it would be access, or possibly replace on my own? It'd be nice not to have to RMA it, but of course I'm worried about voiding the warranty. -
My Asus G50vt has a similar problem. It first started with the red dots on black images/background and now look what I've got. This is the 2nd time I'm sending it in for repair. The first time they supposedly replaced the motherboard and graphics card, but I don't believe them.
Just RMA it and see what happens is my advice.
