Hello all, I am running a G53SW-xn1 which as you know has the nvidia GTX 460m. I have the GPU Observer gadget installed and while playing Assassins Creed or Starcraft II I have noticed my GPU temp seems to be anywhere from 86° to 93° Celsius. I do not have it overclocked, as far as I know it is set to stock speeds. I guess what I am asking is whether or not this is the normal temp for this GPU while under load/gaming.
Thanks!

while thats still under the safe limit of 100*C for GTX460M i dont think thats normal, mine got as high as 83*c but thats it, no more!
-
For the G53, that's about typical with the one I had here. May need a repaste.
-
The fact that I installed a second drive (SSD) shouldnt have anything to do with it correct?
-
No, not at all.

Nope the SSd shouldn't increase your temps,on the contrary, those should drop as it's not a mechanical Hdd.
Btw my max is 83-85c after some hours of BFBC2 oced (in sig). Also it's summer here, roomtemp is 29.4c, which is like sauna.
Blow the vents or think of a repaste. -
My maximum GPU temp was 84C after 5 hours of mafia 2 on the highest setting. Playing MW2 for hours on end, it used to touch 82 and not more. What is your idle GPU temp?
-
Well sitting on desktop it appears to be around 52-55*C, with my browser open (Firefox) and reading the forums/typing this it spikes to 58-62*C. Couple of dumb questions here though; I am running my laptop to a 24" monitor at max resolution, could this be a factor? Also could it be possible that my GPU temp Observer is inaccurate?

An external screen forces the card to stay in 3d clocks, so if you're aware of higher temps and gpu observer reports higher clocks is completely normal.
There's no way to force a lower p-state using an external monitor, it's a problem with nvidia drivers. -
Is that the case even if I am only projecting to the monitor and have the screen on my laptop turned off? Also forgive my ignorance but what is p-state?
-
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
Yep is the same.
Also p-states are power states. Usually gpu cards have 3: low 2d state (51mhz) high 2d (203mhz) 3d performance (675mhz).
Those reported in brackets are gtx460m specific p-states so you'll get the idea.
Also keep Msi afterburner open to see clocks behaviour instead of gpu observer; you may want to know that starting from 280.xx drivers those gpu accelerated browsers like firefox and chrome switch to 3d state due to the newer power management architecture which seems to act like a bugged thing right now.
Nvidia is aware of the issue afaik. -
Do you have a link to a version of msi afterburner that would be best?
-
My GPU idle temp even when browsing the interweb for 2 hrs. using a 280.26 or 280.19 drivers are 38-39*C. . Thanks to Chastity for the hint reguarding the 280 drivers idle temp when browsing..
With 275 drivers idle temp and browsing temp were 37-40*C.
Gaming with Dragon Age Origin OC at 776/1350 full Ultra max GPU temp after 6 hrs. is 73*C.
Gaming with Metro 2033 OC at 800/1500 for 4 hrs. gpu max temp. is 75*C. / At 828/1728 max temp. is 76*C.
Gaming with The Witcher 2 OC at 828/1728 for 4 hrs. max GPU temp is 76*C.
I have used Afterburner, GPU-Z, Inspector, NVTools as monitor, I've never seen 79*C max temp. yet. And will never go that road..
Also Google is everyone's friend.. -
If you close your laptop while using the monitor the temps should raise
-
So after playing a mission on SC2 with it on high settings this is my temp and msi afterburner graph. I have no idea how to interpret the results. It sat at around 85*C this time.
Also I do not shut the lid, I have always left it open.

You're perfectly in range.
Although it's worth saying that those are the temp I get after a few hours of gaming with clocks 814-1628-1600 (Crysis 2 multi,bfbc2).
Also my g53sw have a smaller cooling system compared to the g73.
At this point I would try to clean the vents or think of a repaste if you feel it's too hot.
Canned air/compressed air will help. -
My GPU temps on idling is around 47-49C. This was after leaving my computer on for three days straight while I browsed and downloaded using torrent. I use the latest drivers. Ambient temps here is around 33-34C. -
So to blow out the vents I need to remove the keyboard and then the back panel?
-
Yes i think. I'm not very sure though. I think I read somewhere that you can blow compressed air in through one vent and watch the dust flow out through the other. I think that was for a g73 though. My g53jw has tiny holes whereas the g73 had big gaps at the vents. Idk about the g53SW.
G53sw-xn1 GPU temp too high?
