I like to use my desktop replacements as real desktop replacements with a desktop monitor, but currently, my desk doesn't have enough room to do a dual-monitor setup with both desktop and laptop screens, so I like to leave my laptop closed and put on the corner of my desk somewhere.
This worked fine with a G60Vx that I had a while ago, but when I try it with the G60Jx, it overheats and shuts down when GPU load reaches 100% (when playing Crysis). Current GPU temps are 65°C at idle, 73°C at light use, and 86°C at full load (with lid open).
Is this normal?

Mine idles around high 50's to low 60's and maxs at just under 85 when playing games and I never have any issues.
The thing I'm wondering is if the computer is getting a good enough air circulation. Try flipping her over belly up and play that way to see if it makes a difference.
But even then 86 is not the max at which she would shut down, that is not the thermal load. So what is it getting when it does overheat? I found a really neat tool called GPU Observer, its a gadget and can tell you your temp. Let us know what it is hitting when it crashes/shuts down. -
lol that's about the same temps as my g73, FYI. Of course, that's my temps in furmark... not gaming.
The reason it's shutting down is a power draw issue, there are lots of forum posts about it.

I'll try to get temps before it shuts down, but it's a little hard to do since pinpointing the exact time before it's about to shut down is tricky.
Ok, I'm begining to think DCx is right. I can't get a reading over 86°C now and I know that's not enough to turn off the machine. CPU temps are also well in their 70s.
I took a link at the link and found nothing about a fix for the G60Jx. Is there any way to fix this? -
LOL sorry, wrong link. There's a thread around that fixes your problem. Not sure where, after all ...
Not sure if this is it, read up?

Still haven't found the answer to this yet.
Can anyone help? -

You can try removing power4gear, I think it's some sort of power management driver problem. I never had this problem with Linux on my G51, but did have it in windows. I tested both extensively with power draw and temperature, and it never was very conclusive. That's why I think it's a driver issue.

Besides, he's got a perfectly good (except for this problem) computer. Not all of us are made of money... lol -
I´ve got the same problem with my G51J. It is crashing while playing some games, but when i play rendering in 3ds max or Premiere,it works good.
Now I will try to not use power4gear, and 'll give you results..
