Just did the cooling mod did weekend. Laptop is G60jx from best buy. I bought a G60vx bottom panel from ebay which fits the Jx just fine..
modded the panel **see pics. Also have Notepal U2 laptop cooler under the laptop. Notepal was running at all times during testing and 1 fan is directly under the GPU opening, other fan is under the other big opening at the middle of the laptop.
at Crysis i was getting 30s (**Very Playable) fps when i overclocked the GPU to 640/1990/1580, everything at enthusiast settings except for shadows - max temp was 85C
I returned to the default GPU setttings as you can see on the screen shot.. reduced the graphics to everything on gamer, shadows at minimal. I was getting about 30s and max temperature was 70C. So there is a big difference in gaming quality and performance.
CPU was also at extreme turbo overclock at all times.
yesterday i was playing some TF2, AA at 2x settings at high i got max temp at around 70 i believe.

Very nice, BTW, what is the gadget on the top right showing the GTS 360M's temp?

"GPU observer"

I have a Jx also and got iffy FPS on Crysis high... I'm a bit of a noob but how do you overclock it?
Is it safe? Is there a big performance hike? -
i use EVGA precision program. there was some difference in FPS but if you dont have the cooling mod and laptop cooler i suggest that you do not overclock it.
I have reached 91C playing crysis in the past with no mod, no laptop cooler and it was stock.
now that i have the cooling mod, better airflow, laptop cooler, i tried to see what kinda performance i would get at crysis.
I would lower the settings at crysis to Gamer and change the Shadows to minimum. Try that and tell me if you get better FPS -
I think it's admirable that you're concerned about the temperature of your GPU, but now that you're pulling air directly in from the area above the fan, you're no longer pulling it in from areas and cooling other components.
Before you installed the new backing plate, the air was being pulled in from different areas thus drawing it across the memory, capacitors and hard drive keeping them cooler.
I hope everything works out alright for you with this mod. -
harddrive temps have been the same. I cant comment about wifi card, memory and all...
-
i opened up the bottom to clean it up... I usually blow air once a month. there was almost no dust buildup at all.. I blew some air anyway.. everything still looks great. temps have been great.
-
Sorry for refreshing, but I done my own cooling mod to my g60jx.
I also repasted gpu and cpu.
Now in idle: CPU has 38C and GPU 40C
In high stress mode (witcher 2): CPU has 64C and GPU 82C
For few days I shoudl have cooling pad HIBERNA NC300, so I will write how temp has changed. -
How was taking the thing apart?
I've considered repasting, but i always chicken out haha -
taking it apart to repaste is super easy, becareful with bolts to not lose them, habe some 90% rubbing alcohol to take the old paste off which is a to get off.
apply only small amount and close up, its super easy
i have u2 which is more than enough and the size is just perfect -
for now i dont have enough money to buy something better than Hiberna
.
repaste is very easy cuz you dont have to dissasembly everything in your g60 like in other notebooks, to repaste it. I changed also this silicon pads on GDDR of GTS360, to arctic silver V paste. to clean old thermal paste u can use isopropyl alcohol. -
this is nice. i like this. i showed mine to another kid at college that had a G60jx. mine's a G51vx, so it had the original style bottom plate.
i broke my chrome ring as well, but i got lucky in the respect that it only broke in one spot. i used some JB Weld to hold my grate in place. before the grate i modified a fan cage from a old power supply.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v152/grungeboy/1028002134.jpg
the next step was getting something to make use of that hole. so i created a usb-powered, cardboard, laptop cooler.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v152/grungeboy/1120001817b.jpg
later on i changed out the black grill for some speaker mesh, works a lot better. be careful if you used hot glue to hold that in. the internal chassis temp gets high, might soften the glue up. i used jb weld because it has a high heat tolerance (it's a mechanic's friend, you use it on cars and such mostly, usually on the engine). they make some faster drying stuff that's not as high heat, but still withstands 400F.
later on i figured out how to mod the color of the backlit keyboard.

this shot is red but i ended up going with a light blue and white scheme. -
Little upgrade

I have another question. I have i5 520m with 2x2GB ddr3 1333MHz Hynix. Can i change it to 2x4GB 1333MHz?
I read that i5 520m should handle 8GB, but specification on Asus web page is telling that i5 520m can handle only 4GB in this model (g60jx). Which opinion shoudl I believe?
I saw someone's signature on this forum, who has g60jx with i5 and 8gb ddr3. -
My processor is the i5 430m. It says on the website that the processor can handle 8GB of ram. and sure enough it does! like a champ!
its DDR3 1066 MHZ 7-7-7-20
G.skill ram
I bought it because the ram that ASUS gave me was faulty >: (
Had random blue screens for months
Ever since i got the new 2x4GB RAM from G.Skill the computer has been running flawlessly!
Would be a 6.6 if it weren't for that darn HDD!
-
ok thank you for advice. Now i will take look for a brand new memory

Quick question thats a little off topic.
Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card in this model? -
Can you explain to us the steps you took to mod your G60jx? I have the same laptop and am having heat issues...When I play Battlefield 3 my GPU peaks at 91 C which is a tad too high for me. How exactly did you cut those holes? I want to do something similar but don't know how to start.
And for the OP, you mentioned that you used the Notepal U2 cooler...what's your opinion on that? I am deciding between that and the Coolmaster x2. Since it's the graphics card that heats up the most, I'm assuming that the U2 is better because you can move the fan to the lower left corner where the GPU is located.
And last, can you use Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU or is it recommended for CPU use only? Thanks. -
Pass on the Notepal U2. I had the Notepal U3 for my G60JX....a piece of crap cooler on many levels. You think "hey i can move the fans around..sweet!" ...Totally over rated. The fans they give you hardly push air. You can barely feel it when you put your hand right on top of them. They don't cool things down at all. AND the USB thing that the fans are connected to is VERY VERY VERY fragile. I knew that when i bought it so i was VERY careful the entire time, and it still broke within a few weeks.
Yes you can use Arctic silver 5 on the GPU, it's still just thermal paste even if you put it on the GPU lol. However i would recommend ICD7. It does a better job of cooling and you don't have to worry about shorting out components on your motherboard in the event that you accidently get a little bit of paste on the board like you would have to worry with Arctic silver 5. The silver in AS5 can cause that problem. ICD7 does not contain silver -
My GPU just peaked at 95 C today after an hour of Battlefield 3
I've also read that 91 C isn't bad and that laptop GPU's, especially ones from Nvidia are suppose to withstand some extreme heat, but the gpu is located right underneath where my left wrist sits and it annoys the heck out of me because its so hot.
I just canceled my order on the U2...It seems like many other people have had the same complaints that you have. I'm gonna try the X2...although it only has one large fan in the middle, it seems to push the air up really well in videos that i saw. I am a bit worried though that the air flow will not reach the bottom left corner, where the gpu is located. do you have any recommendations for any coolers? -
so, I made a grid, which You can download here:
grid - PDF
Printed grid, I cut to the special shape. Then glued it with tape to the back pannel. Next, I took bodkin and pointed on grid, places where holes should be. Then take off this grid and in places where points were I made holes with 3.2mm drill.
This black net is made from speaker grill.
Now with Hiberna NC300, when I'm playing CoD MW3 on very high detail, GPU has 81C and CPU has 63C. In idle GPU and CPU temps drops down below 40C, and then fan is turning off. When temp is rising to 50C fan is turing on and again is cooling GPU and CPU below 40C. -

I've made some adjustments to my laptop (Asus G60JX) to decrease heat and would like to share the results that i got.
1.) I took the bottom panel of my laptop and made small holes with a drill, exactly like 666cin did to his laptop.
2.) I purchased two different laptop coolers, the Cool Master Notepal U2 and the Cool Master X2.
Results:
Since my graphics card was the only component in my laptop that was running exceptionally hot, that's the only component that I measured. Unfortunately I wasn't able to measure the idle temperature of the GPU.
Before any modifications to the laptop were made, the temperature of the GPU while playing 1 hour of Battlefield 3 peeked at 95 C. (Used CPUID Hardware Monitor)
After making the many circular holes on the bottom laptop panel (See picture in previous posts by 666cin), the GPU temperature while playing Battlefield 3 for 1 hour peeked at 85 C, which was a 10 C decrease from before the modification. It was clear from this result that the stock design of the laptop bottom panel did not allow proper air flow and ventilation.
In regards to the laptop cooler, I first used the Cool Master X2. Although sleek in design, it failed to make any substantial changes in temperature. After an hour of Battlefield 3, my GPU peaked at 85 C, which was the same as before. I then used the Cool Master Notepal U2 for an hour and my GPU peeked at 82 C. The U2 did a much better job. It should be noted that the X2 has one large fan in the middle of the cooling pad, while the U2 has two smaller fans that are adjustable; you can place them wherever you want on the cooling pad. I placed BOTH adjustable fans in the bottom left corner of the cooling pad, which is where the GPU is located. I was not able to do this with the X2, which again, has one large fan in the center. After testing both, I am sad to say that I will be returning the X2. The X2 did not match up to the U2 in terms of cooling ability, although the X2 has a better design, looks cooler, has blue led lights, can be turned on/off, looks more durable, and has adjustable speed.
Conclusion:
The Asus G60Jx (different than the G60VX) has known issues with heat and air ventilation. Modding the bottom panel of the laptop and getting a decent laptop cooler (~ 25-30$) will help decrease GPU temperature by 10-15 C.
Notes:
I purchased IC Diamond 7 (thermal compound) and it has yet to arrive. I plan to apply this to the GPU and remove the stock thermal compound. I have no idea how good the quality is of the stock thermal compound, but from doing some internet research, it appears that it is not of good quality. I can only assume that applying IC Diamond 7 will decrease the temperature even more.
Also, please be aware that I also tested using the laptop cooler BEFORE making the small holes in the bottom panel (so basically i used a laptop cooler on a stock Asus g60JX). The laptop cooler did not make a substantial difference. Therefore, making the small holes are necessary for the airflow from the cooler to reach the actual computer components. -
I'm glad to hear, that my mod was helpful
It is easy to do and results are quite interesting
Temps should be lower if we woudl be able to change fan speed at certain temps. My fan is turning on higher rpm's at 81-82C GPU, so if there woudl be an option to set it for example to 78C, temps never will be more than 80C
*little off top
I bought 2x4GB 1333MHz DDR3 and with i5 520m it working greatIn future I will change hard disk to seagate momentus XT or full SSD disk and it will be great computer
-
I still have notepal u2 running perfectly after 1.5 years of owning it.
-
Hey just curious. I'm trying to play Crysis 2 and I have a GPUMeter on my display and it says my fan never comes on? Ok so found that my fan does come on, it was just the widget. I have since removed my lower panel to see if that helps and it does. I have a laptop cooler underneath and right now just using internet I'm get around 70'C. So I'm wondering with all you guys have said I think I might have something else wrong. Could it be the paste?
-
-
I'm wondering if anyone has any pics of where to apply the GPU paste? I just modded my back panel for ventilation. I'm new to this and don't see any paste like stuff when I pulled off my back panel.
-
The thermal compound/paste goes between the CPU or GPU and their respective heatsinks, Meaning you will need to unscrew that" Don't remove or loose your warranty" screw.
If you do go for it be careful not to use too much, I would recommend doing it if your doing some overclocking! (I use Arctic silver 5 but I do hear good things about IDC7)
A little paste and two rubber nubs on the back corners of my laptop does the trick for me.
What are you guys using to overclock and how high do you go?
I like my setfsb, anyone have anything they like better? -
Just do like i do , buy a Razer nostromo. Fit easily in a bag , take it with me all the time , i can't play without it now. And my hands are far from the laptop -
Hi I hope anyone can help. I have done the cooling mod like 666 in the bottom panel and I'm still heating up to about 100c when gaming with a laptop cooler(cheap one) and an AC unit blowing on it. The game is Crysis 2 but it shouldn't be that way. I'm wondering if the thermal paste is bad . Oh yeah should mention idle with all these things is 43c.
-
change thermal paste and then check your temps. It's easy and cheap;_)
-
I've noticed that Crysis 2 heats up my GPU more than any other game I've thrown at it (original Crysis and BF3 included). Card has reached a max temp of 105c (that's with repaste and copper and drill mod with cooler on bottom). The max I get in other demanding games range between 80c min to 100c max. Of course I overclocked but I believe Crysis 2 makes cards run hotter.
-
Well I've reached 101c with the Force Unleashed 2 with everything on high. So I'm wondering if I need to change the thermal paste? When running TFU:2 I didn't have an AC unit on it. Does thermal paste really make that much of a difference? And does anyone know which is the good stuff?
-
Did you blow the dust out of the fan? That sounds more like the culprit.
-
Yes I didn't have much dust anywhere. Going to Change paste. Has anyone cut the blue wire to the fan so it will be on full speed. My fan has 4 wires not 3 like everyone I've seen. So curious if its still the blue wire.
-
Ok so did the bottom panel mod, cut the blue wire and with a cheap cooler at idle 43c to 47c, normal use 55c. I want to repaste, does anyone know the best stuff to use? I'm also getting the cooler master storm sf-19. So can't wait to see temps.
-
I've had by Jx for a while now, and it's starting to reach temps of 100c+ when on BF3 for more than an hour, throttles, and I have to stop playing.
I haven't gotten a duster yet to clear out the vents, but is there a disassemble guide somewhere? -
I used AS5 and it helped with the temps just a little bit. I think somewhere the newer nvidia drivers brought my temps up really high, something to do with one of the new features I don't remember (maybe it overclocks your GPU slightly lulz hence the decent performance boosts in recent games like BF3).
I have the CM Storm SF-19 and am using it having done the copper and drill mod. It definitely improves temperatures by 10-20c and no longer does my GPU reach the critical temp of 108c or go past it. Playing BF3 it starts and stays around 80ish slowly gets to 90s and stays around there. The max it went was up to 100 but provided these cards run hot and I overclocked mine anyway I'm satisfied as it's not going up to 110 and downclocking.
I forgot to mention I was using a cooler in the above post. Other users reported Crysis 2 overheating their GPUs, even a desktop user. So the issue is apparent but possibly a minority. -
-
love it for the most part. At least I can enjoy Battlefield 3 without the GPU overheating. That was my main purpose because I didn't notice this occurring until I tried to update my drivers and play this game. I did notice that some of my other games would lag just a little bit before but I didn't pay attention to the temperatures assuming they were all right and having my fans on full blast anyway.
I still believe there's other things going on inside because my temperatures shouldn't be this high. Maybe I could have pasted better or I'll have to repaste a few times as some people have said it necessary to do so. -
ive had my g60jx since it came out and i use no cooler or mods wat so ever and all ive done is a cleaning every month. the fan may seem some what clean but the heat sink near the exhaust exit on the inside( if u look in ward thru the fan with a flash light) it clogs easily causing alot of heat to back flow. my max temp after cleaning in around 87 on swtor . i use my airbrush compressor with a small piece of fabric ( piece of old t shirt) rubber banded over the end to catch any moisture. dust always comes flying out. just my 2 cents
-
Thanks guys to keep mentioning the dust issue. I've only blown compressed air over the fan and the outside of the lappy and a bit inside. I'm going to take the fan out later tonight and try what you guys did to see if it's dirty. It seems my temperatures keep getting gradually higher and I don't think a constant 100, or 105 degrees celsius slowly creeping up to 108 is normal even on a slight overclock.
EDIT: Wow just took apart my fan to discover the vent was really dirty. After dusting it off I proceeded to game without using a cooler and my temps were 70-78c with slight overclock. I sprayed compress air into the vents before without opening the laptop but that probably didn't do much and may have even clogged it up worse. Good thing I finally checked and did it. -
Could anyone show us the modding guide with pics and/or video???
-
There are vids on youtube.. Sorry
-
Laptop still runs like a beast...
-
Along w latest nvidia drivers n newest evga OC software i can now adjust the voltage on gts360m..
Default 1v - will increasing voltage allow my card to stay stable at higher clocks??
Edit: i still cant adjust voltage.. Nvm tr voltage increase.. I guess i really gotta invest in a desktop -
Hi curious, does anyone still have their G60JX? I still have mine and love it, only done the backplate mod and keep it clean with the cooler master sf-19 pad its great still. So anyways has anyone upgraded their ram or dvd drive to a bluray?
-
I still have mine. I been playing nfs shift 2 racing game w momo racing wheel just fine
G60jx cooling mod w/ pics
