So here's the deal: I have this g71gx-rx05 laptop. Works great, suits all of my needs as both gaming and computing machine. But there's one thing.

As of a week ago, I've been having trouble powering it up. When it is off, I hit the power button to turn it on, and only the top LED lights turn on. I can hear the fan running, and it makes a sound like when I go to open my disc drive, because it makes the sound but the drive doesn't open.

There are a few LED indicators on the right hand side of the keyboard which include the caps lock, num lock, had drive indicator, email notification, and touchpad enable/disabled. When this issue occurs, the hard drive indicator does not light up.

In order to power up the machine completely, I must cold boot it by holding down the power button. The lights and fan turn off, and I have to attempt to turn it on again. Sometimes this takes up to 3 tries to turn it on successfully.

I really need your help, before I throw it at a shop just to waste $100.

    Thanks

    Moved to asus gaming.

Try powering it on without the battery, only on AC. Try the opposite, only battery and no AC.

Try removing the battery and AC adapter for one minute and then see if you can get it to power on.

Try resetting the BIOS to user defaults (F2 at startup).

It sounds like you may have a hardware problem, it can be as simple as a failing fan. Is the fan spinning up normally, or making any bad noises?

Another common problem could be failing RAM, you can try removing one stick at a time and see if the booting problem persists or not.

Usually if a drive is going bad you will at least get the boot logo and start of POST, but you can try removing the hard drive(s) and optical drive to rule them out.

You should have narrowed it down a bit, or if not, ruled out a lot of the above, in which case you may have a motherboard problem.
