I just got the G71GX-RX05 about 3 days ago refurbished by Asus. I know it is a little old but i got it for amazingly cheap so i couldn't pass.

But i have noticed something that's really kinda starting to scare me.A completely random odd almost chirp sound coming from somewhere in the computer. It may be a speaker issue but it still does it while on mute and i have updated the drivers for audio.....I'm really not sure where its coming from. It could be hard to isolate because it is totally random and sometimes does it 5 times a minute and also can do it maybe once every 10 minutes.

Performance wise the computer seems to be completely fine no issues there whatsoever but there is this sound. Honestly i could live with it, it doesn't bother me a whole lot other then that It scares me that it may be a sign that something will fail soon.

If anyone has any ideas thanks in advance.
P.S it hasn't "chirped" in about 5 minutes right now.

Hi Dukeblue and welcome the forums :)

Just for clarification, would you say the "chirpping" noise also sound like a "click"? If so, I'm assuming it is your hard drive that is producing these sounds since laptop hard drives are notorious for their clicking when it's about to fail. However, even in fully functioning drives, clicking can also occur when the actuator arm moves about the drive, especially when the actuator arm is parked when your system is idle. My suggestion is to perform a SMART scan/test of the drive to check if the drive is faulty.

    :) Thank you

I'm not completely sure but it seems to be almost digital. But maybe it is the hard drive Clicking sound and I'm just not familiar with it. Also another thing to note is that sometimes its really loud and almost makes me jump and others it is quiet.
I plan on taking a closer look to see where it is coming from today. And I'll post what i find.

After posting this i started noticing a clicking that i had ignored earlier. This is most likely the hard drive but i can still hear that chirping sound occasionally to.

The clicking is clearly coming from the Hard drive. Its very quiet though i have a hard time hearing it most of the time. But even after trying to find it the chirp I'm still having issues finding it.

okay just a little update if anyone is still interested lol. I've ran quite a few diagnostics on my HDD and everything seems fine. Although the sounds can't be good everything may be okay. That is assuming the chirp is also coming from HDD.
