So my buddy and me got bored and decided to do somewhat of a cooling mod on our Asus'. Just thought I'd share what we did. I know it's been done on a number of other Asus and Alienware laptops and heard that it has helped dropped temps.
Materials: Gorilla Super Glue, Black Sheet metal (from home depot), Dremel, and Drill.
Hard Drive cradle, well make shift cradle lol. Used the corners of the sheet metal. Holds on pretty well.

The G72 dropped about 10C on the GPU while playing Crysis (81C to 71C) Playing for 15mins. Going to do some benchmarking to see if it stays that way.
The G73 I haven't gotten to run through it's paces but in terms of GPU already showed 2C-3C drop on idle on the GPU.![]()

Great job. It looks very clean and professionally done.

Thanks, it was worth all the effort and trouble
-
Good job!
For the G73 the mod should be done where the processor is. That would be right above that compartment door. -
Nicely done. That grill reminds me of one of those 1960's tube amplified turntable grills.
-
That's very nice mod. I owned G72 previously and heat issue was trouble. That mod for sure is very effective. Not so sure about G73. Could you please post some benches run with new mod in comparison with unmodified one. It will be appreciated.

Nice mod, looks very well finished, if i still had my G71 would try it out
-
Difficulty for the G73 would be to create the vents where the air intake for the fans should be.
-
Yeah i must say that this is a very nice mod.
Maybe i will do that with my G71Gx, if my dad allows that. -

Yeah planning to do some benchmarks and checking of temps. Already showing promise for the G72. As for the G73 I might just consider making holes where the fans are lol.
-
I would do it where the processor is so you have the opportunity to blow cool air directly on the processor. If you keep the "hot side" of the heat sink cooler then it will be less work the "cool side" will need to do.
-
Yeah mandrake i totally agree with you about, then it will better to overclock the processor.
-
Nice idea. Although I would strive for a straighter cut for perfection. But that's just me.
I may attempt something like this.
Thanks for the pics and let's see those G73 results! -

Probably going to cut another rectangle underneath where the fans are :-D then we will see the how much better the cooling will be :-D
-
Nice work on the G72 Mod, Although instead of making a hole on the bottom of my g73 i just went down to JB-HI-FI and bought myself a targus laptop cooler
-
Hi, sorry to revive the thread. But i'm getting confusing results. I'm testing furmark in my G72, with and without the bottom panel, to kind of get and idea of the improvement i would get if i were to mod it like you did. And honestly there doesn't seem to be any difference at all, maybe 1º or 2º acording to furmark; and gpu-z while playing far cry 2 for X minutes. Are you really sure this helped? thanks in advance!

I know this might be a bit late but in reply to the previous post there was really no difference in temp with the G72 if you weren't using a laptop cooler. With the laptop cooler, and the bottom cover on temps were still pretty high, at least for me during gaming and benching. As so as this mod was performed I saw a 5-9 degree C drop in temps on idle for both GPU and CPU and on full load it was a 10-14 degree C drop. But I believe this mod will only benefit you if you have a laptop cooler. Sorry for the late reply might not even matter anymore but hope it helps.

Nice work.were in depot did you find the metal?
I have the g72 and took the cover off and used a usb targa cooler.
I'm thinking about cutting out holes in the cover and installing the 2 fansone over the RAMone over the copper spot.
Have you ever tried this? -
instead of this just drill small holes

Sorry i dont mean to be the one to revive the thread on dumb stuff after the last post being a couple months but i just got my g72 on craigslist for 350 bb model not refurbished and my temps dont go past 90-92 whille gaming and its hot in my house right now but i just wanted to kno how to do the shimmy mod? this is only like my second post so sorry for the cluster any help would be great thanks.
