I bought the Best Buy version of the Asus g73 laptop last week. I was aware of the screen complaints and after booting my laptop discovered that I had one of the infamous AUO screens.
I immedately went back to Best Buy and placed my laptop next to the display model. The display model had an LG screen so I could directly compare the two. After looking at both screens at all angles I couldn't tell a noticable difference between the two. I checked the hardware ID of my screen at it reported model AUO139E.
Could there be other AUO 1600x900 screens being equipped in these notebooks? I find it very hard to believe that my AUO screen is the same as the one people were so passionately ripping to shreds as the "worst screen ever". Either my AOU is really good, or the LG model on display really crappy, or I'm just going nuts/need glasses. (im pretty picky about these things)
I also didn't think my screen looked particularly crappy compared to most other notebook computers there, and I swear I found worse. So I am keeping my BB AUO G73 for now. It has performed flawlessly so far.
Would appreciate anyone else either confirming or disputing this! Just seems odd.![]()

I have my second G73 with the AUO screen and the screen on this one is definitely better than my first one. I also have a G72 with the LG screen and I see no major difference between the screens. I have concluded that either AUO has improved their screens or I just got lucky with the replacement unit.
-
I think they're basically the same, I've been saying so ever since people started returning BB ones because they got the "bad" screen...
-
Like any manufactured item, you get good and bad batches. I've seen some very nice AUO units, and some not so very nice. My Gateway has a 1920x1200 AUO with some nice colors, but very noticable bleed.

Hey I am new here and been reading these Forums for a while now and had to register to say something about this topic.
I two months ago bought a G73JH from BestBuy and did notice on mine that the screen was very poor and the viewing angles were horrid so thats when I found this site trying to hunt down some info on this BB model and about the differences I found out that some BB G73's came with a LG screen and some the AUO and that the AUO was the one everyone was complaining about. So I took mine back to BB and still it had the AUO screen so I returned it to the two other stores and out of 4 different tries they all had the (AUOB173RW01) screen. But I really love this unit so just kept it.
Then last week one of my close friends bought a BB G73JH because he loved mine, so when he brought his over to show me his screen made mine look horrid and I was pissed and said you lucky basturd you got the good LG screen because it was night and day difference, colors and viewing angles were way better.
I then looked up what screen he had, and to my suprise it was not the LG it was in fact the (AUO139e). I did notice something as well the price I paid from BB was $1199.99 he paid $1249.99 I checked BB site and it did go up in price I wonder if BB had Asus upgrade there LCD's because so many were getting returned because of this.
So from my experience the new (AUO139e) is much better then the first run of (AUOB173RW01) and the new AUO screen is most likely on par if not better then the LG 1600x900 screen.
Since I decided to just buy a screen I wanted , I got the A1 (HANNSTAR HSD173PUW1) screen and Installed it last night.
Link for the screen I got!
HANNSTAR HSD173PUW1 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 17.3" Full-HD -
Hey, thx for confirming my suspicion that BB is using a different AUO screen, which is apparently better than the earlier one. And I hope you enjoy your new Hannstar panel, I know I do.

I found out some more info on these screens, we took my buddies out to read what the back says to compare them and it seems both my 3 month old screen has the same model number as my friends 3 day old G73 screen they both read (B173RW01) however his reads (B173RW01 v.3) and mine doesn't also under windows Hardware ID my screen showed (AUOB173W01) and My friends reads (AUO139E) so I am guessing that they have revised this model and they are alot better now and the reason for the ID number being so different is to stop people from knowing they have the Horrid (AUOB173W01). LOL

Thanks so much for the info everyone! This confirms what I thought as well, as I actually thought the AUO139e looked *slightly* better than the LG. Although I was unable to compare backlight bleed, and I know mine has a fair amount so that may still be an issue.
Also I noticed the price increase of the Best Buy model. I had bought mine when it was the lower price and has the new/better AUO screen.
Guess what you can take away from this is the newer AUO panels are pretty good and anyone who gets one may not need to swap for an LG.
Also for what it's worth the batch number on my unit is: J0X-053643

at BestBuy, the price will fluctuate based on stock vs demand.

I got the AUO screen and I find it nice compare to out other laptops at home.. mine has what I want and need on a screen so I didn't returned it....

I been wanting a G73 for the last month.
I bought a g72 from best buy a couple months ago and I had it 10 days and it blue screen crashed on me a couple times so I took it back . But while I had the computer I was reading about the g73 and how good it was. So I just asked them to refund my money then I just spend the next month saving 400 dollers more.
Been doing a lot of research on the computer and I found where everyone said tha the auo displays are crap and that people should check on the back and make sure it says JOX-9C..... or whatever. Today I called every best by in the state and the only ones they had started with an 05. I thought i would just go a head and buy one and if the display turned out to be crap i would just take it back in a few days.
Got this computer home and turned it on and it seem really nice and not what I been reading on the internet. I was thinking if the LG screens are better then this one sweet jeepers LG must be insanly nice or I might have ended up having an LG and did not know it. Looked up the display ID and it said i had an auo 139c.
Anyways this is a GREAT screen to me but other then the g72 I got first this is my first laptop and I really do not have nothing to compare it to other then full desktop moniters and it looks great to me. The JOX number on mine is 053780
I must have gotten lucky or they have indeed inproved on there displays here of late. -
Panel lottery continues... at least now with some decent screens. Grats on your new laptop. Mine has exceeded all expectations!
-
I have a brand new g73 sitting in an unopened box next to me, I'm going to try a few more best buys before I open this j0x-05, but thanks for the new hope of getting a different auo screen. The viewing angle on the original one is just terrible.
Any PO#'s would be appreciated. -
woohoo! I just went ahead and opened it and got lucky with the LG screen. Are benchmarking tools the only way to tell the mhz of the ram I recieved?
As for the lg screen, I guess I notice some view angle increase, brightness... well not SO much.. Minimal increase if any, prob not worth worrying about tbh. -
I also have the AUO139c. In my opinion it looks great, nothing wrong about it!
-
My 3 day old G73 has an AUO139e as well. It is from the J0X-054 batch.
After reading up on this Best Buy screen debacle for months I was really hoping for an LG, but for what its worth I think this monitor is pretty darn nice. The max brightness level is great and after calibrating it with my X-Rite i1 DisplayLT the D65 grayscale is SPOT on. Only minor flaws are the somewhat narrow viewing angles and the lack of deep blacks, but since I typically pull 50 hours a week on my work monitor (HP 24" S-IPS) any laptop suffers in comparison. However, on the bright side (no pun intended) the response rate appears to be quite fast so ghosting/blurring is a non-issue (take that S-IPS).
I think we may be at a point where it is safe to say you can't go wrong with either LCD panel from Best Buy. Kudos to ASUS for phasing out the old crappy AUO!
Oh and the price has dropped back to $1,199 too. Now all I need is an X25-M! -
I have the AUO139e and it's fine too. Only problem I have is the griddy, filmy look. But otherwise, colors and brightness are nice.
-
how do i tell if i got the AUO or the LG?
-
Type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotation marks) into the dialog box.
Go to the Monitors tab in Device Manager.
Right click on "Generic PnP Monitor, and click on "Properties".
Go to the "Details" tab in the window that has opened up.
Change the option to "Hardware Ids" in the drop down bar.
The device ID should either be LGD01DD like mine, or AUO139e, or another variant.
Sorry about the LPL017D, that's my Toshiba's panel. I posted that by accident, lol. -
my monitor screen is a LGD01DD and it seems pretty good.
-
My BB G73 came with an LG. It was grainy slightly grainy from day one. Then pixels started dieing on it. They replaced it with a 1920x1080 HSD173PUW1, and this thing looks amazing. Way better than the 1600x900 I had originally.
G73 - Best Buy AUO screen diferences? (AUO139e)
