So what is the consensus currently about the G73 and video/audio drivers? Best to leave at factory to eliminate GSOD and audio at factory to eliminate lockup with steam?
Back a bit I tried the 10.3 with 2.47 realtek and they worked great. Did a restore and then even looking at the machine made it GSOD or lockup.
just curious.

Gamers often have different needs. I use the stock drivers and have no problems, then again, I'm not a gamer.
-
I have updated the audio driver but did end up rolling back to the stock video. your mileage may differ

I'm running the latest leaked/beta Ati drivers and the newest Realtek drivers and I'm not having any problems...
-
Same as outsida for me. I've swapped video drivers 3 or 4x already and messed with different audio drivers. I haven't had any issues. Your mileage may vary, but I would at least try it and see if there's an improvement.

I thought the general consensus was to uninstall the Creative sound drivers to remove issues, especially w/Steam?
-
As far as I'm aware, it still is the consensus.
-
Call of Duty addict here!
I uninstalled all the Creative software, and running all stock drivers. Everything is running great.
I messed around with various drivers initially (both audio & video), didn't see any improvements, instead started going from one problem to another, and so decided to do a full system recovery and stick with stock for now. -
well lets see, stock video drivers give me 108c on furmark load.. 10.4 gives me 100c but a guaranteed GSOD within 3 minutes of start. 74f ambient.
about done with this. -
I installed the 10.4 graphics drivers from ATI (Amd website), they improved on gaming. Especially on Battlefield Bad Company 2. Noticable change for me.
NO GSOD's of BSOD!
I have the G73JH-TZ008V version. -
just tried 10.3 instead, instant light pink/gray screen within 1 second of starting furmark, going to try stock again.
edit: stock drivers from asus website do not produce gsod or psod, but gpu thermal diode showing 110c after 6 minutes. Do I win a prize? Confirmed with hwinfo program as well.
heatsink not in good contact with chip, too much/not enough TIM, something. -
Application accepted, welcome to the 95 °C club.
Be sure that you are reading the correct temp. As pointed out in a different post recently, TSS1 is not correct sensor to be worried about. -
What is the normal furmark temp for this laptop? Mine maxed at 99c after running for 10 minutes. 10.4 drivers and no GSOD
! I have not seen the GSOD yet on this laptop.
How long do you guys run furmark to test it? I ran it for 10 min xtreme burning mode at 1080p res and no GSOD. -
Of these three sensors, GPU DispIO, GPU MemIO and GPU Shader, FurMark displays the hotter, but less important, MemIO sensor. From what others have said, MemIO at 99 °C isn't a concern.
Whatever temperature the G73 is going to reach, it should reach it in 10 minutes. You don't ever want to see a GSOD or a PSOD, if you do, something failed.
Application accepted, welcome to the club. -
I did got the max t= 103/104°C after 20min on furmark with the 9.12 driver (no GSOD) and 102/103°C with the 10.4 after 10min. Funny, I had consistently GSOD on 10.3 driver version, but not on 10.4... I thought yes it's more stable... however, my laptop freezes occasionally and need to be restarted by pressing power button... It seems to me like time to RMA... just after 2 weeks of use... I'm frustrated...

The only game which runs great on mobility 10.4 drivers is Bad Company 2. With 10.4 game actually uses dx11 (lighting looks much better - for example) and runs considerably faster. Yet my G73JH G/B/Y/R/SOD's on ANY other game.
It's really silly. I find that depressing as well, because I don't want to game on outdated, low performance stock drivers which are the only ones capable of running everything without any crashes. -
I agree with you maev. Have exactly the same problem. Mobility 10.4 or 10.6(leaked) run much faster, supports ati stream proccesors (CUDA like) to help decode media files and better supports dx11 (but not 9.12 stock driver).
I also noticed that Alien vs Predator runs in dx11 mode only on 10.6 leaked drivers. Would be stupid to keep 9.12 stock drivers.
I tried many combinations to have stable windows on other then 9.12 but without result. I only noticed on 10.6 leaked that if I change GPU memory freq from 1000MHz to 998MHz or 1002MHz it's more stable (no GSOD in Furmark). -
-
So, the 9.12 drivers are considered bad even though they're reliable. But, the 10.(4|6) are considered great even though they're unreliable.
If anyone wonders why earlier I said, "Gamers often have different needs", now you know. -
Cheers, -
Me too.
I used 10.4 for a week or so. Noticeably better load times on BFBC2 and didn't get any crashes on games. Tried to watch a blu-ray, however...made it about 15 minutes and crashed - GSOD. I'm back on stock drivers -
I tried the leaked 10.6 for a while. BFBC2 was way better than the stock drivers for load times, and had no GSOD after hours of playing. But I started getting GSOD in other games.
I'm back on stock drivers now, but might give 10.4 drivers a try. The load times on stock drivers for BFBC2 are really annoying... -
did anyone get a noticeable rise in frame rates after updating from the stock to 10.3s or 10.4s in their games?
I dont play too much BFBC2, but if the frame rates improve, i might give it a shot.
G73 - Best thing to just leave video/audio at stock drivers?
