One of the things I like to do is watch 720p/1080p movies on my notebook computer when in bed. I rest the laptop on my stomach.
The problem is that my current Dell gets so freaking hot doing this that it becomes uncomfortable after about 30 minutes.
Does the G73 get similarly hot on the bottom when watching movies?

no offense... but that's the stupidest thing ive ever heard. 1st.. do NOT what so ever.. ever rest a laptop on anything cloth. 2nd.. they do make laptop desk tops that go in your lap and are padded on the bottom. 3rd.. ANY laptop that is set on a material that absorbs and holds heat.... will get hot. 4th.. if you don't want to have to replace a laptop because you've continued to set it on cloth.... don't. What you're doing is cutting the air circulation so it cannot cool itself, AND you're setting it on a material that holds heat, so you're fking it up. Not to be mean or rude.. but that's what you need to learn and fast. What I'm telling you now will save your laptop, and any future laptop you buy as well as you from spending a lot of money trying to fix it.

I always use my g73 at my lap. Every time I'm at my bed I put it on my lap, So far its bearable for me just make a gap in your legs to have some air flow in the middle. I play dota and watch series in it and its been great for me
sometimes NBA it gets hot but its still bearable. I have once tried an alienware 15x, I was so use to putting the g73 at my lap when I did it with the alienware, It was really hot! unbearable hot! just my experience

@Skullbussa the bottom stays warm so your stomach can take it. However I wouldn't advise covering the bottom vents on any laptop. -
My current laptop's fan is in the far rear/left of the bottom which I keep off of my body so it is unrestricted. But I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get a flat laptop pad to use.
That is good to know that it runs cooler than the Alienware. I was also considering the M17x R3 but have heard that it runs quite hot. -

I've been watching movies and playing games with my G73. It stays super cool. However, you shouldn't be watching movies while laying in bed like that. Its bad for your posture and you could end up with neck issues

You could get a 40" lcd panel and mount it on the ceiling and get that wireless HDMI connection to watch videos and play games in bed.
