Hi All,
Do you know why sometimes core of GPU is downclocked to 500MHz and cannot be changed to 700MHz again?
It happens just after system comes back from hibernation.

what BIOS are you running?
-
He's probably playing a video.
-
Bios 2.09
I do not play any video -
Have you tried adjusting your powersaving modes? Try throwing it into High Performance. You could also use the AMD GPU Tool for HD5870 to adjust gpu clock speeds.
-
it happens to me too sometimes but goes back up on its own..
started happening after bios 2.09 -
I tryed to change powersaving mode but it did not work. The clock come back to 700MHz after system restart.
-
You didn't try the AMD GPU Tool did you?
-
No, I hoped it would change automatically. I have to wait for the next time it happens and I will check with AMD GPU Tool
-
Today I have noticed the same situation. During watching DVD GPU core was downclocked to 500MHz but after watching it has not been changed to 700MHz. Looks like is something wrong with bios 2.09

yes, I did and did not help

I had the same problem after watching some HD video files. The GPU would stay clocked at 500 mhz and was only fixable by reboot or manually through the AMD clock tool.
This is what fixed it for me (read below)
Check your windows sideshow settings and make sure you dont have a device that is using windows media player. I think if it is, it keeps windows media player active after closing and prevents the GPU from going back to 700MHZ. I have a logitech G13 and it was using windows media player under sideshow settings. Once I deselected it, the system behaved normally.
BTW, I have bios 209 also.
To find the Sideshow settings just click start then in the search box type "sideshow". should pop right up. -
thx for the info. The problem is I cannot find SideShow. Do you know where is it?
-
I just hit the start button and did a search for it in the search box there. I think you can also find it under control panel --> Hardware and Sound.
-
I can say for certain that "sideshow" does not show up in the Start search box with Windows 7 Home Premium. -
I have Home version. What add-ons do you mean, Kalim?
-
Like if he installed "sideshow" separately or was it included with a different version of Windows 7 than the one you and I have. I don't know anything about "sideshow", but I do know that typing "sideshow" into the Start search box yields nothing.
-
Like, the g51 had a little blue OLED, and sideshow could send it temps, cpu usage, hd stats or whatever.
It's been in every copy of vista and 7 for a long time now. The reason you're not seeing it when you search is that you do not have any connected sideshow capable devices or corresponding sideshow gadgets installed. (They're basically the same as desktop gadgets) -
It happens when the laptop is on battery and WMP is on. When AC is turned on GPU core stays on 500MHz and will not change to 700Mhz when WMP is turned off. You can check yours laptops - should be the same - BIOS BUG.
-
The power saving mode (power 4 gear hybrid) will usually by default downclock to 500mhz when using battery unless you configure it yourself. Its switches to 700mhz when its plug-in. You might want to check the setting carefully.
-
I do not use power 4 gear hybrid
-
Was any solution ever found to this? Mine just downclocked to 300/1000 mhz after going to battery mode, I can adjust it back with the AMD tool, but it'd be nice to have it automatically adjust as opposed to having me adjust it whenever I'm plugged in or not.
-
Change your PowerPlay options.
-
I have no idea what causing the problem. A new vbios did not change anything. Any suggestions?
-
did you use gpu-z with log enabled to see whether there are fluctuations or if it is always the same?
-
it is always the same
-
If you figure this out, let me know. Having the exact same issues with mine!
-
@xstealth lol just wondering what temps you get when your gpu is underclocked.does it actually cool your lap?hahaha.
as for the problem, powerplay seems to the culprit. flashing to 209 shouldve gotten rid of the clock problem. i cant see why there should be an exception. -
OK guys sorry to have to bump this but im having the same issues...
GPU-Z is reading 400/1000 for me...and yes I have power4gear set on High Performance.
I have BIOS 209 and vBIOS 211. No wonder im suddenly getting lower performance playing Witcher...but then again it might be the reason why my GPU temps are only 53-55c idle and 78c after 3-4hrs straight of play.
anyone solved this problem yet? -
Uninstall it, use windoze power mgr
G73 - core of GPU downclocked to 500MHz
