Ok so while trying to install my first game on the computer, Quake 4, the install paused for 5 mins or so and then started back up. I could hear the bd drive stop spinning and the game install screen freezes..... I tried another game, AOE 3, and it is doing the same thing.... I dont know if it is a hard drive problem or bd drive problem or even a driver problem. Any help would be great... Thanks

OH one more thing. the BD drive will NOT autoplay the games I have to manually explore the games

Try disabling Trend Micro crap first.

You shouldn't need to install drivers for your optical drives to work properly. Try installing/playing other DVDs/bluray disks to see if you can replicate the problem. If so, it's likely a faulty drive and you should RMA it with Asus.

As for the autoplay, it could be disabled in your registry, hence you're not seeing the autoplay pop-up window.

To enable it go to Start > Run > type Regedit > navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom > double-click Autorun > check whether a zero or a one is displayed in the Value data box > if value is 1, you are fine. if value is 0, right click to modify the value and change it to 1 > Next, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer > double-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun > if value is 0xb5, this means autorun is disabled. If that's the case, right click NoDriveTypeAutoRun > modify > in Value data box, type 91 > select Hexadecimal, and you should be all set.

    Hi guys,

I seem to be having problems with my BD-ROM as well. Is it just the case of BD-ROM lasers possibly being extremely sensitive or does it not read certain ripped DVDs or CDs, the brand of disc I use are TDK dual layer DVDs. My drive does not read my ripped games etc, claiming that no disk is inserted, however these work fine on my old PC and others I have tested. Do other G73 users share the same problem or should I RMA my laptop? ANy advice would be much appreciated guys, cheers

.....oh and its probably fair to mention that it reads original copies of games just fine, could possibly be the quality of medium I use...but you never know, opinions would be great

TDK is not exactly cream of the crop, but its not horrible. If you burned it at a slow speedand had a clean laser on the drive that burned it then I would say the medium is fine.

If its not the medium then its definitely the drive then....I should have also mentioned that I cant burn CDs or DVDs with it either (the Asus recovery util wouldnt let me backup win, claiming no disc was inserted). I tried burnin a cd using itunes and sed it wasnt wrkin coz the disc was tryin to calibrate and gav me the option to stop calibrating before burning....so i ticked to box, however it then told me it wasnt wrkin coz the disc was not calibrating on my 2nd attempt :S....If ur G73 has a BD-ROM does it read burnt DVDs and CDs without any problems??

Yes, I can burn CD DVD & DVD/DL and read same without issues. Do you have a CD virtualization software running for mounting .iso files etc.? Those programs are know to cause issues.

    Cheers,

well i do know about a dvd cleaning kit . actually i should have elaborated a little. will a dvd cleaning kit work on a bd player since the mechanics are the same or do i have to use a special bd kit for this.
a friend says a dvd cleaning kit will work.

In theory, a DVD cleaning kit is supposed to properly clean the laser head on any drive which supports a DVD. Now if the BD drives have a laser head (which it does.. :D), then, Yes, it would work .

This is a very interesting possible coincidence. i don't have a blu-ray drive, but a few days ago I had a similar experience with my DVD drive. Turns out the laser was somehow getting snagged or hung up on the aluminum plates that cover the inside of the unit. The odd thing was that most of my burned media [CD-r, DVD-r] would refuse to recognize, while purchased media would usually recognize, but hang in the middle of trying to access or install. A corner of the bottom plate snapped out while I was fiddling with it, and instead of trying to put it back into place I just cut off the tab on the end of it with a pair of side cutters. put it back in, works fine. The odd thing was that most of my burned media [CD-r, DVD-r] would refuse to recognize, while purchased media would usually recognize, but hang in the middle of trying to access or install.

Best guess is that, since I've been moving the thing around so much lately [and holding it one handed, usually under the center] that the weight maybe deformed one of those aluminum plates and caused it to pop out of it's slot, snagging something attached to the laser.

Don't know if that'll help anyone or not, but it's something else to look at.

This is probably the greatest con to this laptop, the drive should be a slot load no exceptions, id deal with a slot load easier then a tray, especially a tray that leaves my blu ray diode completely exposed out in the open,

depends on whether you're considering the aspect from a user standpoint or a corporate profit margin standpoint ;)

Only if we get a swing down cover plate. I've had to take the drive out of my wife's macbook TWICE now b/c my 4 y/o wanted to watch a movie. . .when the disc was already in.

Not sure I agree with this. That slot load mechanism seems to fail very frequently on the Mac laptops we've used. Perhaps it only happens on those very thin 9.5mm slot load drives. Not many BD-ROM drives that thin anyway (and real expensive too).
