the drive worked fine with Ashampoo since 2010 and recently stopped burning DVDs and after a while stopped burning CD-Rs as well. I haven't changed the program, haven't banged it or moved it too much, i guess the recording function's got a 2 year lifespan.

I wonder what's the next part of this laptop that's going to stop working...

Disk drives tend to get dusty, which can cause them to stop working correctly. You might want to check out the laser if it's dirty, but don't clean it with normal tools!
Mine still burns DVDs fine, just used it last week.

hmmm, i suppose it could've gotten dusty when i was blowing compressed air in the backside vents.
should i try blowing some air around the optical stuff? what's the best way to clean it? i also have a microfiber cloth, can i use that?

Take this video, but you can right skip to 2:20: How To Clean A DVD Burner Laser (very cheap and easy) - YouTube
Please note, I would take cleaning alcohol and not drinkable alcohol :)
And do take just a veeery little of it, it should NOT drip into the drive!
Please also note that this might break the drive alltogether if not done very careful. Oh and do it with the battery removed and the power also removed.
