Hi All-
I just realized my CPU fan stopped working. I tried troubleshooting without taking it apart but nothing has worked so far. I fear having to send this back to Asus again and waiting 4 weeks. Last time I sent it in it was for a simple keyboard issue and it took them a while just to start working on it. When I posted it here someone gave me a link to buy a new keyboard. I was hoping someone had a link to the CPU fan so I could just replace it. Anyone know where one is available? TIA!

I'd like to know as well. My fan (left side) sounds like paper hitting a fan constantly. Even though the Asus service station is around 30 min away, I'd rather just replace the fan myself. One thing tho, and I don't mean to sidetrack the thread, but how do you remove the keyboard? I tried to do it like the disassembly guide states, but it won't budge. Only the thin plastic layer on top of the keyboard pulls away. Thx.

It's like the disassembly guide shows.
There's a couple pieces of double sided tape under the keyboard...if you slide your fingers under there (being mindful of the delicate cables) you can slowly peel the tape to separate the keyboard. -
What you actually pry is actually backwards of what you think. (I know because I messed up the keyboard and realized how it worked once it was out.)
The little tabs you push in are actually attached to the laptop above the keyboard. you push them up (in) so the keyboard can lift up. Do not pry up on the keyboard without pushing these little tabs back into the laptop. -
the place to look, once the site comes up (its down for me atm) would be here: http://estore.asus.com/shop/category.asp?catid=749

I opened up the system and there is actually damage to the clip on the power cable for the fan. I could probably get away with just replacing the clip instead of the whole fan. If I can find either I'll buy it. Anyone know the technical term for the clip so I can ask Dr. Google?

Can you initiate RMA with asus and ask them to mail the replacement clip to you? (I think you're referring to the 3-4 pin connector/header)
-
Yeah it's a 4 pin connector. I called Asus and I told them I just wanted to buy the fan and do the repair myself and they said no. They went out of the way to tell me that no computer company would do that and of course I told her they all would except for Asus I guess. Many companies have a spare parts store you can buy from so I don't know why they made a big deal about it. I was told I had to send it in and I told her in a very nice way that their support is horrible and I would never send it in unless it wasn't booting.
Soooo.....I wrote down the part number off of the fan and called HP. Nice surprise that they have a few models that use the same fan and they sold me one. Thanks HP! and once again Asus has made me regret ever buying from them. -
While your solution was more elegant, I don't mind saying that in situations like this, it would be time to play another round of Customer Service Roulette or CSR for short.

That's really odd. -
It was a bad day for my laptops all around yesterday. My OCZ Vertex LE 200GB also died on me. Now I wait for OCZ to contact me.

Man that sucks. I am also buying a M17X with 5870's in crossfire. But all in all I really do like my G73JH and would like it to last me a long time. Hearing about your hardware problem is such a bummer. Keep us poseted on what exactly is the real problem. I hope for a speedy recovery.

The fan from HP came in today and although the fan was the same the casing for the fan was not. So I pulled the plastic four pin connector off and attached it to the Asus fan. All is well again. No more crazy temps and I put a i7-920XM back in. The 920 is idling around 50c.
Now to deal with my other bad luck which is a failed Vertex LE 200GB and a failing M17x. -
Think we need to start a group for cursed laptop users if there isnt one already. I know I'm cursed, since last Nov I've had 7 laptops(3 G71GXs,1 NV81P, 2 Gateway NV7901u's and last one just sent off the G73-x3) all of which went back before the 30days was up.
Pretty much all of them had some manufacturing defect, so I know I am not doing anything wrong, just the worst luck possible.
This A2 will be my 8th, I am getting incredibly tired of returning laptops. :\
Anyways, good to hear you got your G73 working, hope to hear you get your other laptops working too. -
I just got a RMA# for my M17x. Don't know what I'm going to do now, either order one when the 5870XF is released or just build a high-end desktop.

So go get a GPU that has a TDP of 100W? That will cause more problems than it solves.

Hehe, well actually, I make sure to buy from places with good return policies.
So I havent lost a penny since I sent my first one back. One good thing about some online retailers is now they pay for shipping back defective items. So I've been making sure to only buy from the ones I know will.
Still been a mental tiresome, and I guess thinking back on it now, I do have to use my own tape. So I guess I've lost about a buck or so in tape. The UPS place is on the exact route I take to go to work, so I never lose out on gas.
