I own the Asus G73JH with an Intel i7 720QM processor. I do alot of 3D work so a fast processor is essential. Does anyone know if I can swap my 720QM for a 940XM? Has anyone done this with success? If you dont feel this is possible please leave me your opinion why so I can continue to look into this.
    Thanks.

I have. There is a video how to disassemble the G73. Take a look at it. Gives you an idea how difficult it is. Questions? Shoot!!! :)

I have replaced a CPU on the G73 before accept it was my friends and we only put in the 820 I just wanted to make sure my laptop was compatible with the CPU's I had in mind.

For anyone who might want to do the same thing, the G73 Rbbx05 is not compatible with the 940XM because it only has the HM55 chipset where as the 940XM needs the PM55. The 920XM will work with the HM55, and it only has a 6% decrease in performance over the 940.

According to the Intel docs (click the Compatible Products link) and success stories here on the forum, the 940XM is compatible with the HM55 chipset.

From what I have heard the 940 is not supported by HM55, only the 920 is. If you do find out the answer please let me know because I am more interested in the 940, and I know that the prices will drop quite a bit when the new i7's roll out.

Are you sure that the motherboards are the same chipsets? I was reading on the Intel site that the 940xm is compatible with the PM55 chipset?

Im hesitating between 920xm(460$) and 940xm(810$). there only +6% with 940xm but its the best :p.

A non-ES (aka retail) 920XM will do just fine, so save your money. :)

Sandy Bridge CPU's will work on an Intel HM55 Motherboard......which is what the G73's have.

o wow..almost $400 difference for a 6% performance increase? lol id rather get the 920xm. Plus the 940xm is $810...add another $70 and thats how much I paid for my g73jh-rx lol. Still i'll only buy the 920xm when its alot cheaper. Cant justify a $400 purchase for an upgrade i dont really need (yet :p)

Alas, good to know all g73's support the 940xm..Now if only the GPU was upgradable this would be the perfect rig :p

The 400$ price difference is crazy... when you use throttlestop you can set the multiplier of the 920xm CPU yourself and get to 940xm levels with ease. The 940xm is better, but it's really not worth 400$.

By the way, there's a "cheap" OEM 920xm on sale on ebay.

Well, yes, the information leaves much to be desired imo, but nevertheless the seller describes it as an OEM... a picture would definitely be nice.

Well, it's clearly described as an OEM, when they're actually selling an ES it's fraud...

I am not going to upgrade mine till maybe this time next year when I can get one DIRT cheap.

I also read that you couldn't get the 940xms in the 720s, but if you can that is good to know.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the sandy bridge processors are a different chipset.

433 is still a great deal, good luck with bidding!! In case you win, don't forget throttlestop to unlock the full potential of this beast (for example 24-25 multiplier across all 4 cores :D ...= 3.2-3.3 ghz)

I have seen that some sandy bridge notebooks comes with H55 motherboard and g73JH has same chipset too. does it means that we can change cpus with sandy ones??

I had changed my old laptop`s cpu in this way, new one had done well.
What is your opinions? I am planing to change 720qm to 2720qm

I don't think it's possible, according to the Intel website the SB processors have a different socket type than the first gen i7... don't think it would work.

But it definitely won't work on the current G73JH because of the BIOS which doesn't support SB CPUs.

Also, info claiming HM55 chipset could be incorrect.

AFAIK, the new CPUs need a 6-series chipset.

    Thanks for the info.

I agree, SB needs 6 series chipset.

    I see..

It would have been great, if it works :(
