Is there a way to downgrade the firmware of the HD because I recently upgraded its firmware. The HD becomes much louder and really noticeable I would like it to be back the way it used to be.

First of all, what HDD do you have?
Secondly, the loudness/performance is usually adjustable with a tool from the manufacturer. You can set it to be more silent and with less performance, like it was before.

haha i am on the same train :)
done this too and i can hear it louder than before

first you can't change AAM permanently (even with Hitachi feautures tool) and if you change those values it does not make any difference for me

second i've tried searching for the older version which was 0003SDM1 but it is not available for downloading nowhere

third l I've contacted Seagate if they can help somehow and they told me that my HDD are OEM and i need to contact my manufacturer (so i wrote to Asus but still waiting for a negative answer from them)

fourth i've found only this firmware Momentus 7200.4 (Firmware 0003LVM1) from LENOVO but i haven't tried it becouse i don't have a disk to burn it or something (here is the link)

Don't you still have a bootable flash drive lying around from when you updated your vBios? Anyways, the HDDs are definitely louder with the newer firmware. Well i don't really notice it from my OS HDD alone, but if i run something from my second one i can really hear the difference with both HDDs active.

Odd, I've flashed 3 laptops with the 5SDM1 and neither are any more louder.

Well, i flashed then repasted right after, so it might have more to do with the disassembly and reassembly. Anyways, i just notice them a bit but nothing major, with any amount of background noise i can't hear them so it's possible that i just never noticed before and again it's only when my 2nd HDD is used. It's the one on the right side as well.

i have a bootable flash drive but we were talking to revert to an older firmware (for example the lenovo which is a bootable disk)
strange thing is that when i've downloaded that file and put it in virtual disk it showed that has nothing there.... probably needs burning

@scampupy so you want me to screw up my HDD and told you not to try it? not good :)

@Chastity the noise is not loud noise but it is definitelly louder than before (lots of people noticed that)
make sure you clean your ears regularry guys and girls , you are getting a little deaf :p

p.s for those who wants to downgrade burn the lenovo firmware and try to extract it somehow if it is possible or search for another firmware on internet (i think there is one more from apple to download but for MAC)
don't just ask for a solution ... try to find a solution :)
if not get used to the 0005SDM1 firmware :D

EDIT: those are probably all the firmwares that are running on the st9500420as HDD

Once you get used to the loudness, you'll think its the same as before. The noise is nothing compared to a WD drive.

Chastity has a new firmware on her drivers and applications page. It's the same firmware number from Dell, but it seems to have quieted down the HDD. Maybe it's slightly different. It's done very easily though, just burn onto a thumbdrive and run the .bat. The 0005SDM1.LOD used by Chastity's flash package seems to be quieter than the one from Dell even though they seem to be the same one. Can give it a try and see for yourself. Probably just placebo on my part. But if you are concerned about downgrading, try flashing to the 0004SDM1.LOD.

    ST9500420AS Firmware v5
    - Firmware package from Chastity's page. This includes the flash tool and .bat auto command line.

    ST9500420AS Firmware v4
    - Did not try this one. But it's included in the Dell Update. Just add this to the thumbdrive and edit the seagate.bat 0005SDM1.LOD with 0004SDM1.LOD.

    Doesn't hurt to try.

Found a post on a forum stating which firmware to upgrade depending on which original firmware it had initially. Can use HD Tune to check.

Mine was 002SDM1 so I was correct with 005SDM1.

@laptopfan88 no man that's not new firmware ... that from 2009 i think and she just put it now in her page so that's why it says new kapish

that's the same firmware from dell nothing different

    i might try firmware v4
    thanks for the link

p.s can you post the link where you found that 3sdm1 needs to be updated to 4sdm1

EDIT: i have downgraded to 4sdm1
made some readings and that should be the firmware for the 3sdm1 stock (looks like it is more compatible or close to it)
