    OK.

This is exactly what I hate ATI drivers.

So, I have my G73. I have it setup so when I plug it in to my 1080p TV it turns off the LCD screen on the LCD then puts it up on the big 1080p screen.

This works great. Easy enough right?

Well, went to a friends house who only has a 720p LCD to watch a movie. Guess what happened?

Blank screen on both. Because the TV is not hooked up, there was no way I could find the settings beforehand. Safe mode works but it appears that there is no way to set the display settings for a TV not plugged in?

Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I just want to set the HDMI connection settings before I have it hooked up.

Are ATI drivers really this crappy cause this is a non issue on Nvidia.
(using the latest drivers from the site)
    -Thanks!

Seems to me that it's a problem with his TV, not the computer. Maybe nvidia forces an additional signal to make the TV pay attention, but if it's working on one TV and not another, you probably have to force the TV to re-check the HDMI connection.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortuately that is NOT the issue.

The issue is that her TV can ONLY do 720p.
When I hook it up to my 1080p screen it works fine.

Now I know I can easily just set it to 720p when I have it hooked up to my 1080p TV but what if (like I did) I dont have a 1080p TV available?

I have the laptop set to shut off the screen when HDMI is plugged in, then set the HDMI to 1080p.

On Nvidia drivers, you can still set resolutions on historys of devices plugged in. This way you can just set the resolution of the external display before plugging it in.

ATI on the other hand doesn't seem to have this option.

So again, ATI experts out there, how can I hook up this laptop to a 720p TV if the settings are set to 1080p without having to hook up to hook up to a 1080p screen??????

The TV res settings should be autodetected. If they are not, change your desktop res to 720p before connecting it.

Also, if you are on Windows 7, try press Windows Key + P a few times and then wait to toggle which monitors are enabled.

Except, the issue - the way you described it - points directly to a problem with the TV, not with the computer.

Ok. Well I tried all those things. This is odd.

    So heres the deal.

Laptop set to 720p enable HDMI 720p LCD - not work
Laptop set to 1080p enable HDMI 720p LCD - not work
Laptop set to 1080p enable HDMI on 1080p TV - WORKS
Laptop set to 720p enable HDMI on 1080P TV - WORKS
Laptop set to 1080p enable 720p FROM 1080p on HDMI out - WORKS on BOTH

So it seems that if at any time I set the res over HDMI to 1080p, nomatter what it wont switch auto res to 720P on the 720p TV.

When I then (while having it hooked up to the 1080p TV) switch it to 720P over HDMI I can use it on the 720P no prob.

It seems to me that when the HDMI is set to 1080P it will stick there nomatter what even if the TV ONLY does 720p.

Only way to get out of 1080P is to hook it up to a 1080P TV and res it down to 720P.

    Any ideas?
