Anyone seen both these screens? I bought G73jh-b1 and found out it has the Auo screen. Is one grainier than the other? I know the Auo has a bit of a screen door effect.

I heard the Hannstar screen is really good and beats the AUO screen in pretty much every respect. I have the AUO and it has a very light grain effect when black is on screen. Also the viewing angles aren't the best but overall it's still very usable and still looks great during gaming or HD video. Not as bad as I've seen people claim it to be but one of these days I will surely switch it out for something better.

Your the first i have seen with a 1080p AUO screen on these boards... Clevo had them originally then moved to Hannstar but the people on the Clevo boards seemed to really like the AUO ...

When I called the Asus repair center to get an LG replacement instead of an AUO, he said they don't use either anymore and use Hannstar.
I haven't seen the Hannstar panel personally yet, but I know there's no way it's worse than the AUO.
Static/snow on grays, horrible pixel shift, but otherwise, I can care less about viewing angles and it's fairly bright and colorful.

The 1600x900 screens were terrible from AUO but the 1080p ones are a different story..

He is talking about the B1 which i guess since he mentioned AUO they thought he was talking about the RBBX05 Bestbuy model..

The Hannstars are nice screens though ;)..

Rgr. Check that when I get home. Wonder which one my A1 has since it seams to be using a lot of the same parts as the new B1's... Though the monitor looks no better/worse than the first one I got.

    Can someone verify this?

I was under the impression that Asus dropped AUO because of their poor quality. I was under the impression they stopped buying AUO a year ago. If you have AUO that's just Asus getting rid of their stock of it.

Nope someone said the new G73-BST7 at Bestbuy is using a newer version of the AUO screen which i guess looks just as good as the LG 1600x900 screen.. (They are shipping with both though someone got the LG and the other was the newer AUO)

As for this guys B1 having the 1920x1080p AUO panel thats a rare thing..

    Hello,
I have a BestBuy RBBX05 manufactured in June of this year, and it has the AUO139E listed as the Monitor - I have compared it to the LG version 1600x900 screen and I saw absolutely no difference in the display quality and felt no need to return it to BestBuy in hopes of scoring an LG version.

Obviously a little off topic from the OP, but thought I'd throw in my observations.

I am just trying to download Everest to tell me the screen number again. Dell uses the same Auo screen I think. It is 1900x1080 colors are vibrant and for watching tv with the laptop skin tones look better than my last laptop. Maybe this is just an Ati graphics setting but sometimes icons, shapes like circles are a little bit jagged around the edges. Maybe Nividia is just better at smoothing edges out. I think I can get the Hannstar screen for a really good price if it would be a upgrade. Can you see any screen door mesh effect in your Hannstar screen?

Out of curiosity - What difference should have I seen when I put my AUO G73JH next to the LG G73?

The screen is Au Optronics B173HW01 V0
Laptop is a few weeks old so Asus is either using up old stock or still use Auo.

I brought my G73jh back because the store just got the G73jw. Now I have seen both screens. Both have a bit of screen door effect. The AU Optronics B173HW01 V0 is much better than the Hannstar HDS173PUW1. The major difference is the AUO has both better whites and blacks and is a bit brighter. The Hannstar has backlight bleed at the top.
I think I am going to buy the AUO screen because it is less then $150 delivered. Does anybody know if it can be installed using the inverter that is in the laptop? Hope so. Is there any better screen that will work with this laptop? The laptop came with 3D software but not a screen for it. Is the 3D screen out yet? Thanks for any input.

I have the AUO and it is on par with the other laptops out these days. Not good at all. I've owned tons of laptops over the years and I've just started to see these displays with terrible vertical viewing angles roll out on several laptops in the past 2 years. Dell/Alienware, Asus, Acer - I've seen it on all these laptops. I am certain there are several other manufacturers that use the same crap panels as well as a cost cutting measure.

It's not TERRIBLE, but my biggest gripe is definitely the horrible vertical viewing angles. Other than that - it looks fine on anything but a black screen.

In my opinion for most people that have never seen a better laptop screen - wouldn't think much of the AUO. It's only those who have seen better that know any better.

My A1 screen is a Hannstar HSD06A5, as not to get confused with the other unit listed above.

EDIT: I had a blonde moment. :) It's apparently a HSD173PUW1. Seeing how well this screen is, I find it hard to believe AUO made a better panel.

Not sure what AUO screen "three4seven" has but I am suspecting it is a 1600x900? The Hannstar HSD173PUW1 is Ok and that's about it. I am looking at it as I write this. It really does not have good white its grayish compared to the 1900x1080 AUO B173HW01 V0. That particular AUO also has the blackest blacks I have seen so far and also the best whites. The Hannstar is dull in comparison. I was watching just analog tv through a usb tuner stick. The AUO has exellent color and really shows the cheek makeup news people wear that some look clownish. Vertical viewing angles are not great on either but the Hannstar is worse and looses color tone quickly with angle. My Hannstar bleeds some light at the top of the screen maybe they got cheap and took out some of those reflective sheet that are in the panel. The 1900x1080 AUO B173HW01 V0 is a much better screen than the Hannstar there is no doubt about it.

You must have gotten a bad Hannstar panel. The color balance and saturation is top notch, and whites are not tainted at all.

I got the Hannstar in a G73jw and have had it less than a week. Others have also been complaining about backlight bleed in this model. The white on the Hannstar is fine until you see how white really is with the AUO panel. I will probably be switching my panel out eventually.

I just purchased a B173HW01 V0 from Amazon because of the backlight bleed on my G73JW. Amazon gave me a $359 discount after I exchanged my G73JW once and the replacement was worse. They bought my B173HW01 V0 and then some.

It would only be a few steps around a repaste. Get the top cover off the main body, expose the screen mounts, get it loose, then you work on the monitor part itself. Not that hard on any laptop.

Anyone got a link to that really good ASUS G73 teardown guide? Wish we had a sticky with the PDF itself.

the instructions can be found in the search tab of the forum, also you have youtube videos, i take the opportunity and made the gpu and cpu repaste with icd7, then replace the monitor, took me like 4 hours to disassemble and reassemble the laptop, im very happy with this asus :), btw i didn't rma my psod problem because i live in south america, we dont have asus support here if you buy the machine from USA (y buy it from tiger direct) and send the pc to usa cost me like 200$ shipping and then another 200$ coming back, i save lot of money doing this, also save TIME, my plans for this pc: upgrade the cpu, this machine rocks with ssd (i got a patriot torqx 128gb)

So I tried to open it and see if I can change it by my self. Fortunately, I managed to go in to the screen and take it out successfully. Bad thing, I did it without having the replacement screen yet. :D I thought it was hard thing to do, but it was easy. It took me like 20-30 mins. Just take all the screws and you'll be able to change it. There we're like 20 screws unscrewed. I got some pictures here :

So.. I'm getting a new screen, the 1920x1080 one. I'll try if I can do a video on changing it so everyone could see on how it is done. I just need $ and ill get one.

    cheers

What is the LG 1900x1080 replacement model number? Do you figure its the best replacement model out there? Is there a screen door effect? How are the viewing angles?
