Hey everyone. Got me here a BB model G73JH (5870)
Flying to Italy and wanted to know if the outlets on the plane would be able to handle this thing?

I was thinking of pulling the battery just to be sure. Also, anyone know if Alitalia airline has power outlets on the seat?

This is a US plug laptop btw.

    THANKS!

The max power draw on airlines could be different from carrier to carrier. But it will fine if you don't game. Total power draw in the region of 65watts total is what most laptops are ranged at.

Then you should stick to non demanding games. Start stressing the CPU and GPU and you'll be going over that 65W quite easily.

Unless you are rocking first class, your Neighbor in the seat next to you will want to punch you...

I'd recommend setting your power plan to power saver and seeing how it goes for some of your games. More than likely, that should limit your CPU and GPU draw to keep your max draw down, but you may need to tweak the plugged in adv settings to mimic the battery setting more closely. You could always hook up a kill-o-watt and tweak to 65w useage that way.

    Umm good luck getting power...

    Call the Airlines first...
When I flew to Germany on a United 747 in coach, there was no power to be had...

I hope you have a differant plane...

Thanks for the reply guys. Its a 777 and I found out it has a thing called
EmPower ports in every seat even regular non fancy seats. Now when looking up this empower thing it seems there is 2 versions. A 75watt one and a 110 watt one.

Other then that I cant find anything else on it.

Let me ask this though, how much power does this thing suck up if im just watching movies and have it set to that power on battery low setting?

    THANKS!

I tested using a high quality 1920x1080 .mp4 (1 GB for 3 mins) video. The DVD was standard DVD quality. I used max brightness for the display and VLC as the media player for both. Backlight for keyboard was lit on dimmest setting (used only about 0.5 watt) My battery was removed to ensure power used was strictly for the laptop power.

    ELECTRICTY USAGE:
MP4 file, Windows Power Saver battery setting: 50-52 watt, fluctuates
MP4 file, Windows Performance: 55-58 fluctuates
DVD, windows power saver: 52-55 fluctuates
    DVD, windows performance: 53-56 fluctuates

The difference between the brightest display setting and the dimmest display setting is only about 4 watts, so just adjust for comfort really.

I used a Kill-a-watt to measure by the way. Love the lil' thing.

    Happy traveling!

If your battery is at full, you will draw less power. You may be able to get away with the 110w option if you are not charging the battery too.
